What causes a fire extinguisher to go empty just hanging on the wall?

Where does the stuff inside go?

Whatever it uses to put out the fire is still in the extinguisher. It has lost it's pressure charge. Depending on the type of extinguisher and it's cost you may want to throw it away and buy a new one. If it's an expensive unit and can be recharged you can have that done. Call your local fire department and ask where you can get an extinguisher recharged.
