Cheap car? Young first time buyer. advice on cars?
What's a good car for a young person?
I'm looking for a small car that's reasonably cheap to insure for someone young. And a car which looks smart. Will still look good in years to come.
Any ideas? I want to get my first car :)

I'm not sure which continent you are living on, but there is one car I would highly recommend which is sold everywhere: the VW Golf (also called the Rabbit). It is a fun, cool, small, cheap, and all around brilliant car (and smart looking). Definitely get a Golf/Rabbit if you live in North America! Oh, and the Golf/Rabbit is a timeless design which will continue to look good for many years.
If you live in Europe, you have about unlimited options. I like Fiat and Ford here, but also the Vauxhall Corsa. As people have mentioned, the Clio is another good one. Like I say, all small Euro-cars are good.
In Australia, again, I like the Ford Fiesta, and the Fiat models. Plus the Golf.

There are so many factors in choosing a car. For a cheap car, Honda Accords + Civics; Toyota Corolla/Camry are reliable and cheap. The newer designs look better than old.
Subaru cars are also very fun cars to drive at a good price. The hatchback is very useful for travel.
If you want a small car, the Smart Car is super small and cheap. The mini-cooper is small and efficent too but expensive.
I would also look at some Volkswagen vehicles. They always look nice and are fun to drive.
Do not buy fast cars, their insurances are much higher. Usually two-door coups are more expensive insurance-wise.
Kias are probably the cheapest.

unless dads buying it, there is no suc thing as a good first car. atleast i dont know of anyone who has had one that fits the criteria of cheap to insure (nothing is cheap when your young and first insurance) And looks smart AND looks good in years to come.
if you find a car like that, let me know, cause for id buy it.
what i would do is get a car with the intention of changing it in 6-12 months or when you crash it, whichever comes first. i do not say this in jest....you may have passed your test but you need to learn to drive. so get a small engined car such as 1ltr to a 1.4(max) engine. the reason for the 1.4 limit is insurance. you wont get much for the extra .4ltr so personally id get lower. as low as poss. saves on petrol too
the kind of car id look for would be an old VW or toyota. they tend not to break down, but they do cost if they do :( i say old, thats because you will not want to spend much on a car you might crash, bump, crunch gears, scratch etc plus it wont go down in value much when you sell it. cars are expensive, you will learn ;)
next, you have got rid of that car and are looking for another one. now you have got experiance, some insurance history. so you can get a better car for less insurance cost. plus you have saved up more money. and are better able to look after the car
but if dads buying, then id go for a gti golf new. or a clio if your female. or if you got more money a bmw 330 cab, or female merc slk. if dads even richer than that, then you really dont need anyones 'advise' or opinion, anything better and most people will think it looks cool even if you dont!!!

Nissan Micra.
I wouldn't class it's looks as "smart", but in all honesty, you're not going to find a nice, reliable, cheap first time car that looks brilliant.
Check www.parkers.co.uk/insurance for insurace groups. I think the Citroen C1 is in group one, it looks good, but they're quite new, so you're looking at £4000 (+) to buy one, and that, in my opinion, is far too much to spend on a new car.
I got my Micra (L reg) insured for £745 when I was a new driver, that's around the cheapest you'll find insurance these days.
Oh, and I always got at least 45mpg out of it.
May not look good in years to come, but it'll still be strong and alive!

Look into they toyota corollas from about 94-99. These are generally inexpensive cars in regards to buying price, gas, maintenance, and insurance. Also they are good looking cars. Also look into the Toyota Camrys for the same years for the same reasons.

Ford KA's are a good choice. They're cheap to buy and the insurance is cheap too.
As well as that, we've had 3 KA's and we've never had any problems with any of them.

Honda Civic/Accord.
I personally hate them, but they are very reliable, gas economical cars. Easy to maintain and whatnot.
Always look for rust, see if you can get maintenance records from the previous owner, and buy from another person, not a dealership.

You could try one of those junk car dealers. Many of them sell cars for under $500. Also try AutoFerret.com and similiar sites.
