Is it wrong to hunt small game and not use the animal afterward?
For the longest time, I was always completely against hunting. I really despised hunters for awhile, but started to realise it was needed - but also still refused to ever take part in it. But, three months ago, I recieved a pellet gun for my birthday. In the comings weeks, I started to shoot small game in the woods (chipmunks, squirrels, crows, birds, etc). But recently I've started to feel bad about it for a few reasons:
-I don't use the meat or the body at all. It feels like such a waste to kill something and not use it for anything. But, I do sometimes kill chipmunks and use the carcasses as bait for crows. If I don't, I always bury the body and say a prayer (I'm religious don't make fun of me lol).
-I really like animals! I feel really bad killing something that seems so innocent. I mean, whats the difference between a squirrel or chipmunk and your pet cat? Also, I know if I was in the animals situation, I wouldn't want some dumb teen killing me for no good reason
-I feel hypocritical! Just months ago I was a firm member of PETA! Now I'm out killing animals for fun. I will never call myself a hunter, because I don't do it all the time, no more than 3 times a month, when I get the chance or I'm simply bored.
-My parents and grandparents don't really approve of it. They think I'm changing and don't think its right to kill something if youre not going to use it (food, clothing, etc)
The main reasons that I keep going out "hunting" are:
-It gives me something to do. I really don't have a hobby or talent, and I have really good aim! So this is something that I am not only good at but also have fun with.
-My friends hunt. This lets us share something in common. Its something we can do together.
Also, in my defense, I do hunt in moderation. I estimate the population of each species (number chipmunks, squirrels, crows, etc in the area) and base the amount of animals I can shoot with that. There were alot of chipmunks in our woods a few months ago, so I let myself kill about 10 each month. Squirrels, on the other hand, are not so bountiful around here for some reason, so I only kill one for each "season" (fall, winter, spring, summer) so thats four a year. There are a lot of crows in our area and they are pests, and also they are easily scared and hard to get to, so I have no limit on those - get as much as I can. I havn't gotten one in the past 2 months so don't worry!
So what do you guys think? Is it ok for me to once in awhile go out and shoot small game?
What do you think of this solution? I could stick to killing crows. They are eating our grass seed and trash, and get really annoying. Though my parents don't want me out killing, they really do hate the crows. I could just "thin the herd" by taking out a few crows each month, to keep the population controlled. I could also stick to shooting targets and cans in between crow hunting
BTW, I am still and always be a strong democrat haha (Though I am against abortion) Just thought I'd let you all know that.

I would just stick with the crows and cans. The reason why is that the crows as you said are a pest and if you have a problem with them, so does other people around you so by cutting down the population you are helping the neighbors. And also because the other small game are benificial parts of an ecosystem, so by killing them for no reason is not a good thing. And as a nice christmas present you could ask for something like this:

It will bring in more crows which will alow you to have more targets to shoot at, and don't feel bad about killing them because they are a pest and there population is very high. And I wouldn't bury them just leave them in the woods so that coyotes or any predators can eat them, and hey if you do leave them unburyed you can use a coyote call to call in some and you can take some pictures of them or use a firearm or bow and arrow to hunt them as well, I would not reccomend shooting one with a pellet gun because they are after all predators, and don't feel bad about killing them because they are too numerous and they have no meaning to the ecosystem except for killing other animals, which is a negative not a positive.
If you'r parents still have a problem with you hunting you can share these articals with them:

I think you should not kill an animal unless it is necessary (either for food or like the crows-they are harmful). It's great that you have good aim and it makes you feel good about yourself. But... you can practice shooting on non living things and still be proud of your aim. I like your idea of thinning the crows and shooting cans. If you decide to keep killing small animals then you should try to use them. Some people eat squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, etc. If you don't want to eat them you could skin them, clean and freeze the meat and donate it to a hungry family. Use the fur to make something. If you know they are being used you may feel better about killing them.

You can never kill something with it being a complete waste.
Many animals kill for no reason, because it gives them something to do. It also gives fertilizer to the ground and ensures that there is enough food for the rest of the small animals.
You may also be feeding the neighborhood cat. There is plenty good involved in this whether you eat squirrel or not.
I am in the middle group as far as anything political goes, so I don't think my views are in any way extremist.
Do what you are good at. There are plenty of shooting competitions all over the world, maybe you should sign up shooting targets or live game. (whichever you prefer)
Have fun, with whatever you decide. ;)

it is wrong on some of the animals you are shooting. if you kill a squirrel, eat it or find someone who will. squirrel meat is really good and there is a lot of people who eat it. find someone. crows on the other hand are varmints and they eat baby rabbits, so it makes it harder on us hunters. eliminate as many as you can. there is no bag limit on them so take them all out and let the coyotes eat them. don't shoot chipmunks that is illegal. go get a hunting regulation and shoot what you are allowed to shoot legally

Its wrong if you don't eat it. Just the fact that you asked this question lets me know you think its wrong too. I hunt a lot, but I eat all I kill. I also don't like to make a bad kill. A clean humane kill is what I aim for everytime. I would imagine a squirrel suffers from a bb gun

glad you came over from peta, need more of you, but you have to do it legally too! cans ,targets ,and pest that are causing damage to your property are no problem, but the minute you are hunting then you need a hunting license and follow the regulations. most game animals have seasons and limits! i dont agree in killing for fun, but its your conscience! you should try and eat it, you will like it! god made bunnies and squirrels pretty tastey !

You may also be poaching if your killing game that is out of season or has no open season in your area.
Source(s): I have 4 simple rules about hunting 1 - Don't shoot me 2 - Don't shoot yourself 3 - You kill it you clean it 4 - You kill it you better be willing to cook it and eat it - Anonymous1 decade ago
i dont like hunting for 'fun'
if you where going to eat it i suppose then theres a reason
but if your just killing it for the fun of hunting then its wrong
if your not going to use it dont kill it

I hope squirrels chew off your nuts after they tie you to a tree.
