Gas fireplace smoked up my house.?
I have had a gas log fireplace for about 5 years. Just this year, it has made my ceiling, ceiling fans, walls, etc, black with smut. Is something wrong with the heater?
A chimney is not needed.

You may have a very dangerous problem. If the vent is blocked the fireplace will put carbon monoxide into the house. This can happen if a squirrel or bird puts a nest in the vent. It also may just not be getting enough combustion air to burn cleanly you can try to adjust the air intake dampers until the flame burns clean. But either be sure the vent is clear or turn off the fireplace until you are. A man and his 3 teenage kids just died and his wife, a police officer, is in critical condition in our area because of a blocked gas fireplace vent. They are nothing to fool with. If your not sure get a service man in to check it out.vGood Luck

Sounds like you have a blocked chimney, and you shouldn't use ceiling fans with a gas fire due to a reversal pull of co gases from the Appliance.

you won't be ready to run the two the hearth place and the heater on an identical time for the reason reported above. The gas heater creates a decrease stress interior the living house (return air is sucked back to the heater). in view that decrease stress is interior the living house, air coming down the chimney flue reveals it trouble-free to circulate into the living house and produce smoke with it. Can' close the chimney damper - that keeps the smoke from going UP the chimney. won't be ready to open the damper, and enables air to convey smoke into the room. you ought to elect between the hearth or the gas heater.

is there a dampener on it?... that is a vent which allows the smoke to exit through the chimney, it must be open, or smoke will come inside, even worse would be the carbon monoxide !!!!
