The Russians ordered the East Germans to build it. It wasn't the idea of the East Germans as many suggested. East Germany was a slave state of the Soviets and their people where trying to flee from the tyranny

East Germany did to stem the flow of refugees fleeing Communism. The East Germans were Soviet puppets but I believe the idea and it's construction was entirely East German from start to finish.
Thousands died trying to cross that wall.

The name was actually taken from the builder, a man by the name of Berl. He actually lived in a wall in Germany.
