japanese perm /african american hair?
Out of curiosity I wanted to know would the Japanese work on african american hair? Would it last the way it does on asian hair?

I have Latina hair (curly, thick, breaks a lot, tends to be dry), and I had a Japanese perm. It worked beautifully, and I kept with it for a year. The place I went to had before and after pictures of women of all backgrounds, including African American. As for how long the perm lasts, the effects are permanent. I had to let my hair grow for six months and then cut it off at my chin when I wanted to go back to my natural hair. If I hadn't cut it off, I would have had ultra straight on the bottom and curly on top. It's worth the money!

From all the straightening processes out there i believe that the japanese straightening is still the most gentle because its ph it about 10 vs other products with a 12 to 14 ph. I believe that your hair should do great with it. But don't forget to really watch who is doing your process, since there is the heat application involved and if not done correctly, and with your texture, there could be breakage on the roots. Do ask for the exact products used. A lot of japanese straightening is not that at all. It has to be 'Liscio' products only, not the old and harsh product before this one, which is the 'Yuko'. And also, if it takes less than 4 hours, its not the real deal either. Good luck.

It all depend on the texture of your hair. Since all African Americans are not born with course hair, we all may need different ways to get that look.
* if your hair is course you should try washing and conditioning with deep conditioner.
* blow dry until full head is not damp or you will burn yourself with the straightener.
* start directly at the root with a high temp. (since it seems you indicated that your hair may be a little course) and work it slowly from the root down to the end. (do not apply grease while flat ironing try and use a moisturizing spritz)
* after pressing your hair thoroughly, your hair should work well in that style if you are looking for a japanese straight look.
But truthfully, since their hair is already really straight, i dont think that a japanese perm would work in you hair if that's what you were asking.

Japanese hair texture is much different from African hair. Japanese hair is smooth looking but coarse. African hair is more wirey and light. You can do treatment to your hair to make it into the Japanese coarse texture. Then later do a perm... perhaps? It'll be hard to find a stylist in Japan who knows what to do with African hair.
Here's a site that lists all different hair styles. I hope you can read Japanese though. Maybe a friend can?
