do i have to turn off the gas to refit a thermocouple?

It's to a gas fire. I have removed all the trim to gain access to the thermocouple. I have removed the part at the pilot flame but i'm unsure if i can remove the screw thread at the gas supply end - (Valor model 654) - Help!!

It's always a good idea to turn off the gas before working on a gas appliance, to be safe. In any case, you can remove the screw thread at the gas valve end - gas will not come out of this hole. Try googling 'thermocouple replacement' and you'll find some guides. If you have ANY doubt, spend the money for a professional.

No, you don't. The thermocouple's purpose is to shut off the gas if the pilot light goes out. If you have determined you need a new one (one clue would be the pilot light is out and will not stay lit), the gas is already off.

The thermocouple doesn't have a gas supply - that's an electrical connector.
