Agility for Newfoundland?
Hiya Guys.
Am moving to Devon v soon and looking for dog events/classes in the area. Would love to do agility with my Newf as she's very active and loves that kind of activity. The two classes in my current area could not cater for a dog this size unfortunately.
Anyone know of anything suitable?
* Should have probably mentioned that my Newfie is 4 and has a clean bill of health from the vet with regards to this level of activity!

The agility class I went to had a Great Dane who was trying to learn agility. He was not too bad - he would not go thru any of the tunnel things - only the jumps and weave poles. They had been working with him for a year or so but he still was afraid of the tunnels.
Did the classes say they could not accomodate you? If so, maybe they would recommend a class that would be more suitable.
All dogs can do agility, but its not common for the very large ones to do it. Good luck in finding a place.

Honestly, even if your dog stinks at agility, she is going to have a blast!!! But don't let any breed fool you, they can all do it to a point, and almost all of them love it and its a great bonding experience for you and your dog. If you check your breeds website (The AKC site is a good place to start) there should be links to local clubs. Also check with your local petsmart. The dog trainers there usually know of good places to take your dog for that kind of stuff. Good luck!!!

Hi Rach-
Just wanted to point out that you should not be doing strenous activities with your newf until he/she is at least 2 years old. It will not be good for his/her joints if you start jumping them or excersizing too much. Their bodies have to be full grown or you may increase the chances of joint damage and hip/elbow dysplacia.
if your dog is older than that... you could try carting!! Newfs really enjoy that because it gives them a job to do.

welcome to devon! i cant think off the top of my head, but add me to contacts and email me, i will have a look.
where abouts in devon, im near dartmoor, well about a mile from actually, theres lost of notices in my vets and pet shops for agility and stuff, i can get numbers.
just a thought, even-though shes had her vet check, i would think about getting her belly shaved (if its not already) many people do this with LH breeds, especially as NFs can overheat, this will help her keep a bit cooler.

Proper training and socialization are some of your dog's most basic needs. Learn how to set a basic foundation before you begin to train your dog https://tr.im/am6Cw
At first, dog training can seem pretty overwhelming, especially if this is your first dog. Truth be told, training your dog is a very big project. However, if you take it step by step, you will find the task to be far less daunting.

I have a Newfoundlander dog and she excels in agility!
Check your newspaper under "pets" usually if there is any courses/competition in your area they will be there.
Good luck!

Get in touch with a breeder or some one from your kennel club, ask them and you'll find out in no time at all! Oh and by the way, your dog is SO cute!
