Questions about Shorinji Ryu?

Just a bit confused. Are Shorinryu Karate and Shorinji Ryu the same style? Or are they different branches of the same ancestry? Isn't Shorinji the Japanese pronunciation of Shao Lin Si or Shaolin Temple? If so does any of it's techniques resemble the techniques in Shaolin? I also remember reading somewhere(I believe it was Miyamoto Musashi's Go Rin No Sho or Book of Five Rings) about shorinji being a mental state which was a part or a form of zen training, does this version of the term shorinji have any thing to do with the martial art of the same name?

Update:

I see some good answers and appreciate them, But I'd like to wait just in case someone who does train in these arts give some answers that may help clarify some more.

The reason I'm asking by the way is because, I first encountered Shorinji Ryu while in college. There was a Shorinryu Karate club at the local YMCA. Later while working in Manila, I encountered a Shorinji Ryu Karate club too. I've always wondered about the connection and when I kept reading about Shorinji Ryu here on YA, I got more confused since I thought it was one and the same. Apparently I was wrong.

By the way, the shorinji in Go Rin No Sho that I mentioned was actually a school of zen training, I just rechecked my copy and discovered it was mentioned in the preface by the translators as an introduction to Zen which had a major influence on Mushashi's training.

Shorinji Ryu is NOT Doshin So's art - it is Shorinji Kempo.

Shorinji Ryu / Shorinji Ryu Karate are one in the same, as you figured out, probably called differently from being to different lineages.

Shorinji Ryu is from an Okinawan Master named Chotoku Kyan.

    It means - Shaolin=Shorin, Suu=Ji(temple), Liu=Ryu(actual = stream = Style).

    Edit:

Shorinji Ryu does NOT derive from Shorinji Kempo.

You all need to do some research.

He is asking about Shorinjiryu Karate and Shorinji Ryu - they are the same, and they are NOT from Shorinji Kempo, which is actually a very new JAPANESE art.

Shorinji Ryu is an Okinawan art. Chotoku Kyan's student, Joen Nakazato, formalized it and named it.

    Edit:

It is like asking if Goju Ryu and Goju Ryu Karate are the same arts!

    Shorin Ryu is Okinawan Kobudo.

Shorinji Ryu is, depending on who is using the name, either a type of Karate (Sakugawa Koshiki Shōrinji-ryū Karatedō), or a hybrid form of Gendai Jujutsu (modern jujutsu) which apparently was founded by an American and is derived largely from jujutsu with elements from his training in judo, kempo, and a few other arts.

    Yes, Shorinji means Shaolin Temple.

If you want to get technical (and William P will debate this point, since he believes everything comes from Jujutsu) then most Japanese martial arts resemble Chinese arts in some fashion because they were brought to Japan from China. It was from these techniques that arts such as Jujutsu were formed. As for specifically the Shaolin Wushu and Shorinji, I can't say with any certainty, not knowing any more than what I've read on the websites.

I don't recall Shorinji in Go Rin No Sho, but that doesn't mean much. The thing to understand is that the romanization of Japanese words may appear the same, but carry different meanings. When this is unclear, it's important to go back to the kanji (there should be foot notes associated with the use of Japanese words to give their meaning, if not their kanji). It's unlikely that they have anything to do with one another.

    Where's William P?

As far as I know, Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu is a form of Jujitsu created sometime in the 1970s. I think it was created in America, but I could be wrong. It is not a koryu, of that I'm sure. Other than that, there's not a lot I know or can find on Shorinji Ryu. William P says he practices Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu. I've also seen Shorinji Ryu Karate, Shorinji Ryu Kempo, and a few others. Shorinji is Japanese for Shaolin.

Shorinji Ryu probably derives from Shorinji Kempo, which is not, totally, related to Shorin Ryu.
