How do you define "progress"?

For example, our world has "progressed" to the point that we can manufacture amazing things, but we have also "progressed" to the point that to keep doing so will destroy us.

Yes, I know it is a huge generalization....but it is generally true.

Update:

It's pretty funny when people answer questions about language authoritatively and they don't even read the question carefully

The question is "How do YOU define progress"?

the great thesaurus is the first place to go to really get a better understanding of a word and its contexts. based on my understanding of the word in conjunction with the thesaurus, "progress" is just as subjective as every other word in the spoken language ((duh)). however, in my opinion we have progressed.

evolution is accepted on some base level to a degree by just about everyone. its irrefuteable that we were once beings with less technology. all this technology weve developed can and may very well be humanitys self-imposed undoing. but we have to admit that the intellectual and subsequent technological evolutionary path we continue upon has kept most of us alive at some point. so, in the end my personal opinion on the matter is that we have progressed. because of the nature of our existence, things are constantly changing. so perhaps weve developed so much that we are now on the downside of the slope.
