They are immature and bored. I had the same problem with high school students; they were mostly "at-risk" and did not understand the importance of education. I would look at them and tell them they were small children in large bodies.

I would really like to find out why as we had a serious incident at my school and the teacher who got hurt wont return until something is done about it. Any suggestions as to how we can handle this situation?

It could have something to do with how humans have evolved - many baby mammals engage in violent play with one another. This is to better enable them to survive on their own in adulthood.
Perhaps these boys are unknowingly trying out their survival skills on one another?
