find the common denominator between 5 and 2. which is 10. and multiply the top number by whatever you used to get the bottom number to 10. Hence, 5 5/10 + 3 6/10 = 8 11/10 which converts to 9 1/10 !

I'll do this in steps so it's easy to follow each part. It's not really difficult, just long.

You can add the whole numbers and the fractions together seperately.

    i.e. 5 + 3 + 1/2 + 3/5

So you can add 5 + 3 = 8 and then add the fractions seperately.

    (1) Before you can add fractions, they must have the same denominator (bottom). So you have to convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with a common denominator.

    (a) First find a number which is a multiple of both denominators.. Easiest way to do this is just to multiply them together.

    i.e. 2 x 5 = 10 - use 10 as a common denominator.

    (b) Now you have to multiply the numerators (top) of each fraction by the number you multiplied each denominator by to get the common denomiator. You need to do this to keep the fractions equivalent (equal) to what they were with the old denominators.

(Equivalent fractions are made by multiplying top and bottom by the same number - to keep them equal to the original.)

    For 1/2: 2 x 5 = 10, so multiply numerator (1) by 5. Now 1/2 becomes 5/10 (i.e. multiply both top and bottom by 5)

    For 3/5: 5 x 2 = 10 => 3 x 2 = 6 => 3/5 = 6/10 (i.e. multiply both top and bottim by 2)

    (2) Now you can add the fractions together. You do this by adding the numerators (tops) and leaving the denominator the same:

    1/2 + 3/5 = 5/10 + 6/10 = (5 + 6)/10 = 11/10

    (i.e. 5 tenths + 6 tenths = 11 tenths)

This is an improper fraction (bottom bigger than top), so convert it to a mixed number (whole number with fraction). Do this by dividing top by bottom and leaving the remainder in the fraction part:

    11/10 = 1 1/10

    (3) Now add this "mixed number" to the original whole number parts:

    5 1/2 + 3 3/5 = 5 + 3 + 1/2 + 3/5 = 5 + 3 + 1 1/10 = 9 1/10

Well first what I would do to make it easier is make them both into improper fractions. To do that you multiply the whole number by the denominator so 5 times 2 to get ten then add the numerator to that so 10 plus 1 so it would be 11 over 2.....11/2 which is the same as 5 1/2. then for 3 and 3/5 get that into an improper fraction so multiply 3 by 5 to get 15 then add the numerator of 3. thats 18 over 5.....18/5. then you need to get them both to have a common denominator which in this case would be 10. so you would multiply both the numerator and denominator or 11/2 by 5 to get 55/10. then multiply the numerator and denominator or 18/5 by 2 to get 36/10. once you have that then you add the numerators to get 91 and put it over the denominator to get 91/10. hopefully you are following all of this. after that you would divide the numerator by the denominator to get 9.1 which is the same as 9 1/10. if you still have any questions over it my messenger is jasonboehnke@yahoo.com go ahead and add me and I will walk you through it.

Yes the answer is 9 and 1/10. turn the number into decimals. 5.5 + 3.6 (the 3/5 is .6 because, 5 x 2 = 10, times by 10 to make it out of 100 to get the percentage) so that equals 9.1, making it 9 and 1/10. I hope that made sense. Write it down and it is easier to understand.

ok well the 9 1/10 is propably very shy so u need to hook him up with the 8 7/10 or 8 4/5 to get the best result out of the situation

    5 1/2 + 3 3/5 = 8 + 1/2 + 3/5 = 8+ 5/10 + 6/10 = 8+ 11/10 = 9 1/10

hope this helps. now please answer my question u owe me one
