How can a specific Kanji symbol vary and still have the same meaning?

For instance, I am looking at the symbol Kibou meaning "hope" and there seem to be many styles of writing the symbol.

Would this be the same concept of writing an english word in Times New Roman, or Arial, or italics, or something of that nature?

Those are all the same. It's just a different font. So, yes, it's just like different fonts for English.
