Potential Reckless Driving Ticket in Parking Lot-Please Help?
I was doing donuts in a public school's parking lot today (not on a school day, no cars parked in the lot), and one of the district security SUVs told me to stop as I was leaving the lot (he was entering at the same time). He did not tell me what I was doing was wrong, he merely took my plate number and asked to see my license. He told me if I did not give him my license that he would have the school match my plate number with the parking roster (I go to the school - have a parking permit there). He refused to tell me what was going on, or why he wanted the info. I gave him my license, wrote the info down, then told me that he was going to give the info to his boss who may or may not refer me to a cop for a reckless driving ticket.
I do not want a ticket, but more importantly I can't have my parents finding out about it (I'm 16).
What should I do/what are my legal rights here? I know I was stupid to stop (since he had no right to pursue me, since he wasn't a cop, etc), but I really didn't know that doing donuts were illegal/enforced.
Oh FYI- the incident was in CO (either Aurora Police and/or Arapahoe Sheriff jurisdiction). The car is registered in CO as well in Arapahoe County.
So from what I'm reading its either ticketable because it was illegal, and on a public school ground, but people also mentioned trespassing, and it being private property...
So if it is a public school, with no closed parking lot, is it considered private property, or is it public property? If it is public property can I still be charged with trespassing?
Also... what kind of realistic issue am I dealing with if a ticket is issued? I know reckless driving in CO is up to an 8 point ticket, with a fine no less than $50, not to exceed $1000, but considering the circumstances, I have a feeling this will be on the low end. Any input?

well - if you want to talk legal technicalities vis a vis your "rights" then the bottom line is you have none at this point. Legally you did not have to show your licence to the security guard unless he was holding you for trespassing.
It is unlikely they will involve the law - but it is quite likely you'll hear about it at school tomorrow. I'd be mr good-behavior-all-apologies tomorrow. Wait and see what happens - and in the future, try not being such a dum bass :-) and i mean that in the nicest way possible

It is possible that you will receive a ticket. You have no legal rights here. If you do get a ticket you can try to fight it in court. Just because you did not know it was wrong does not excuse you. If you had run the security guard would have got your plate and you would have been nailed for sure. I hope your parents do get notified. It is clear you need some more training to before you are allowed to drive a car. Those donuts you were doing are very reckless to you and others.

At this point, no one has done anything to take away your rights. The security person may be trying to scare you a little....or perhaps they have an agreement with the local police about having tickets written for things not seen by the police themselves. If I were you, I would just wait to see what happens. YOU can not prevent a ticket from being issued if that is policy. All you can do is learn from your experience and if you get a ticket, be up front with your parents.

You really don't have any rights here. You violated the terms of your parking agreement with the school. You CAN be issued a citation for it, but it isn't all that likely to happen. It is much more likely that you will have some type of punishment at school for what you did. As for not knowing that what you did was a problem - use your head. It is indeed reckless driving, and it's stupid.

The security guard was using a scare tactic. IF you were breaking the law, the cops would have been called immediately! As for this being a safety issue, Yes this is! Don't be surprised if you and your parents are called in to the office when school opens to discuss what you done.

Hog wash. You knew what you were doing wasn't legal. And security forces on private property have the right to stop you and even detain you if necessary if a violation has been or may have been committed. If you don't want tickets nor your parents to find out about your reckless driving, don't do the things that bring out those charges.

It would help if i knew your state, but i would have to say first talk to a lawyer (and if you can find one who only gets paid if you win would be good for this situation.) and second i think the cop would be within his/her rights to give you a ticket because it was on a public parking lot where others could be at risk. But again talk to a lawyer first oh yeah and if possible talk to either a lawyer you know or ask several just to be safe. Oh and one more thing it still may be worth it to fight it because the judge may pardon it due to it being your first offence.

Ok You better tell your parents now before someone else does, that way they won't be as angry. If you let it go and find out by someone else, they will be more than angry...They will go threw the roof in a very big way. You tell them then you might get a simple 2 week grounding and won't be able to drive for a month. Then when the air is clear they will end up helping you out.
Now here are your words; "Mom, Dad I did a very dumb thing", and you tell your story very honestly
Hope I Helped

You have no rights. You were trespassing and driving recklessly.
Odds are no one will turn you in but the principal will be told and you will lose your parking privileges. Back to using the school bus for you
