Well, have you ever watched a semi-truck turn? Imagine a semi truck pulling a hundred others trying to turn. Such a long vehicle wouldn't turn right. Once the lead car turned, the others wouldn't follow it by turning in exactly the same place; they'd all just start pulling after the lead immediately. Tracks prevent this from happening.

Consider this. The system of roads (for cars, before that wagons, horses, and pedestrians) evolved, through the massive Roman Empire, and others. One of the largest problems was maintenance. Up-keeping roads becomes more complicated the more of them that there are.

With railroads, you reduce the number of "roadways" significantly, thereby reducing upkeep.

The train was pioneering some rough terrain.

Tracks would serve as both a road, and something that would make the train itself move faster, more easily.

I think they planed to carry real heavy load, and pull many many cars, can you imagine how that kind of train run on high way. On its own tract did not disturb any one and they can pull as many cars as the engine can.
