Theists, please explain the Default Position on the existence of God.?

Please, take all the time and space you need. Oh, but there is a right answer and wrong answer here.

Update:

Mmm, tumbleweed...

Update 2:

If you don't understand the question, don't answer it with "What?"/"uh, ok" etc. You're just cluttering up the place.

Update 3:

Aashiq, that's a very thoughtful and intelligent answer but it doesn't really answer the question.

Update 4:

Tercano, that's very detailed but you don't make the point you hope to. If one "can't be sure of anything", the default position is to not believe anything.

Update 5:

Aashiq, the default position is the position you take in the absence of supported positive claims. The question is leading; the default position is weak atheism, and theists have the burden of proof on their claims.

The logical default is in fact weak atheism due to the lack of evidence to show that God exists- that's just basic philosophy.

i do not have self belief that an purpose default position exists. Many kinds of gods strike me as absurd. i'm surely confident that the universe isn't lower than the administration of an entity that behaves like a defective man or woman -- a nasty tempered infant; or a psychopath; or petty minded capacity freak. conception in such monsters seems to require one of those neurosis. A author God that is largely benevolent, yet enables finished freedom to all factors of the creation -- including loose will to human beings:- by technique of default I regard that as non existent. a probability, yet not likely. I settle for the probability that own journey may lead someone to treat the existence of such an entity because the default. Universe as God: pantheism or similar. I regard this as completely feasable. If I ever come to the acceptable that the finished is wide awake, then i'd supply up calling myself an atheist. I really haven't any default conception the following, so I each and every each and every now and then call myself a pantheist, each and every each and every now and then an atheist.

This can never be determined because of the way that we asses what is real and what is not.

    {Experiment starting point:

It has been said, "The answers are easy it is finding the right question that is difficult" The starting point of every experiment is finding the right question. The outcome of a good question can be answered by either a simple yes or no which is based on measured test results.

The hypothesis is your opinion of the outcome of the question you wish to investigate.

A good hypothesis should have the following characteristics:

-It must have a yes/no answer

    -It must be measurable

-It must be realistic given the resources of the experimenter.

    -The number of observations required to give the "yes/no" answer is governed by the size of the change to be measured, the number of trials (population) and the inherent variability in the technique, population or experimenter.}

By definition, God can't be measured, but either can Omnipotence. So no amount of thinking (I will not say "evidence") could ever satisfy a scientific requirement for it.

But that can be said for some scientific theories.

IE. what was before the Big Bang? Or the nature of the inside of a Black hole. If a singularity can not be measured because the laws of physics break down in it, what are we to say. "There are no Back Holes."?

The purest answer would be: We just don't Know; Yet. It takes a bit of humility to accept.

Edit: True, but that has been said for most every theory in its infancy. Back Holes where considered my many in the past science fiction. Inflation Theory; Worm Holes; Relativity (In witch Einstein had to wait for a Solar eclipse to prove the bending of light.); etc.

I'm not saying God exist. I'm just saying there is no way to Know Scientifically, Ever.

  • I would guess that the default position would be completely unaware or skeptical. Only through indoctrination can we find out that people actually do believe in a God, and that we can if we want. You never know or believe unless someone tells you. But, I also think people will always be curious as to what made people, and they might eventually come to the thought of a deity given time.

Edit: Oh, I'm sorry, could you phrase it differently so I can answer it correctly?

    Here's an arguement.

Imagine it's 2050 and you're in a spaceship and you land on a planet that supposedly no one has been to before. It looks like the moon and there's nothing there except you stumble across a 3 story house with random nicknacks it it, 2 bathrooms, leather sofas. Are you going to ever believe that could have just happened? It's not a crazy analogy when you consider the complexity of DNA. Any scientist would tell you it's much more likely a house could have randomly popped up when you work the math.

Then again, you should know I don't particularly believe in either, I think we just don't know yet and I accept that. But it's a strong arguement that makes me think. There's nothing wrong with believing in a higher power, it's only wrong if you kill people and then blame it on religion.

    Hi

The default is atheism, obviously. No one "knows" that there is a "god" until someone tells them so, or until they invent the idea themselves.

And FizzyBubbler, "any scientist will tell you..."

Errrmmm, no. I'm a scientist, and I can tell you that the cases are NOT parallel.

Now, supposing you found evidence of, say, a decorated cave, a lean-to shack, a log cabin, a mud-brick house and the furniture and fittings equivalents, then I might think you had a point. But no, epic fail.

Because the idea of a deity was conceived of by humanity, the default position would be weak atheism.

It's what we all start as. It's what we all really are. In a gnostic sense.
