Little bits of mold grow in towels because of the warm moist environment of the bathroom. Every so often I take towels, fold them up, put them in the sink and fill it with hot water. Then I pour pine cleaner in the water and let it sit overnight. After that, I put them in the washer a few times, then a final wash with fabric softener. The towels come out smelling really nice, if not a little piney. The smell goes away after a few washings, and they don't get funky for a long time.

It's a bacteria that grows in the fibers. Bleaching helps, but once they get the "funk" it's impossible to keep it at bay. I toss them into the rag bag and use them for house cleaning.

You have to wash towels and wash cloths oven often to remove soap and body oil residue, dry completely.

Adding vinegar to the wash or baking soda helps a bit. The fabric softeners seem to accelerate it, perhaps the fats in the softeners become a breeding ground......just a guess.

you are probably either not cleaning them thoroughly, or they are getting damp repeatedly from the steam in the bathroom. Add baking soda to every wash load and use a strong detergent ( I like Tide) and bleach for white towels. That should eliminate the problem.

You might try washing them in hot water, adding baking soda to the wash water, and washing them twice before you dry them.

You shouldn't use fabric softener on your towels. It reduces their absorbency. Add white vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser instead. It softens and removes odors!

my towels use to smell musty and weird too, even after washing.I found the bounce awakenings dryer sheets work good and if you stack your towels in a cabinet, put a few of those between the towels and use them when drying your towels..it seems to work.

A little bleach in the wash. Maybe color safe bleach. If that doesn't work pitch 'em.
