My lord! Why that guy has mentioned the Kooks in this question is beyond belief. Important Alternative Band??? In yer dreams my friend, in yer dreams
For me there's a few that stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Here they are, in no particular order:
Joy Division-Haunting, beautiful tunes made all the more sad that Ian Curtis took his own life at a very early age. I guess we will never know how big they were gonna be. You can hear their influence in bands such as Editors, Interpol.
The Smiths-The ULTIMATE Indie band. They were a breath of fresh air when the new romantics were dominating the pop charts. They looked cool, had brilliant songs, and still had time to shake things up. For every emotion there is a Smiths song. The Arctic Monkeys owe a huge debt to them.
The Stone Roses-They were a band in the truest sense. Childhood mates Squire and Brown along with Mani and Reni made an astonishing debut album that ranks among the very best debuts of ALL time. They had the right mix of arrogance, swagger and tunes to carry it off. Hell, they nearly made it cool to wear flares again.
The Fall-No other band sounds like The Fall.Ok, they have gone through more line ups than a police station but you cant take anything away from the tunes. I was listening to The Fall just last week and couldn't believe how fresh they still sounded.Mark E Smith is a one off. I'm not sure if he's a genius or if he's just a miserable sod.
The Arctic Monkeys- Brilliant, clever, witty pop songs. They remind me so much of The Smiths. In Alex Turner, they have the most gifted song writer of the past few years. He has a great turn of phrase and can only get better with age.
Source(s): Joy Division-She's lost Control The Smiths-There is a light that never goes out. The Stone Roses-Fools Gold The Fall-Touch Sensitive The Arctic Monkeys-A Certain Romance - bullisLv 45 years ago
