Why are so many military wives disgustingly FAT?

I've heard all the excuses;

1. I've had 2 kids

2. My schedule is so hectic

3. I'm depressed so I eat too much

Granted, it is an American epidemic, but I see so many guys who are in shape and try very hard to keep themselves fit, go home to women who were average before becoming a military wife, and then balloon up! Why don't more women take pride in being a representative of the military family and stay in shape?

Update:

I'm a 22 year and counting U.S. Army and Navy active duty member and proud husband of a very fit wife. I'm also a faithful Christian who would NEVER cheat. For all those people who will answer by citing one of the excuses already listed, don't waste my time.

Update 2:

Ron, Red and YA User... thanks for the candide answers. You may be right about the number of overweight military wives to Americans in general. It is a sad state of affairs. The truth is that it has become so far down on the importance scale it is scary. Longer healthier lives, for your kids and family SHOULD BE a "more important" thing to do!

Update 3:

I'm 5'10", 210, 32" waist and run a 5km in 19 minutes. I work out 6 days a week 2X M-F. My wife and I eat a very healthy organic diet, and we simply want Americans to realize that we are killing ourselves. Military wives are what I see mostly because I'm in the military and they are dangerously obese. It is sad and makes me a little angry to be honest. Angry because they are selfishly killing themselves. Ask ANY of them if they are on the internet more than an hour a day or sitting in front of the TV more than an hour a day and 100% will say "YES!" So, don't give me that "I don't have time" excuse.

Update 4:

Wow! These are some great answers. As Tom said, my main point is that spouses of military personnel are looked at just as closely as those in uniform and everyone should take pride in their appearance and health. I'm 40 and it is not as easy to stay in shape as it used to be, but stop with all the excuses. A proper diet, and burning more calories than we take in will reduce our body fat, period!

My husabnd and I met in college. I was on the college basketball team, so yes I was extremely fit. But after 2 deployments, 1 child and working to make ends meet I can't seem to find time to go to the park to shoot some baskets, or go to the gym. Gym memberships cost money, yes you can use the post gym but like for me right now I don't live near a post while my soldier is gone since I go to school full time. Most husbands are fit because their jobs depend on good PT scores to get promoted, and thats great if they work hard at it. But when your a single parent, have a million things going on, you start to put yourself on hold and consintrate on your kids. I don't have time to work out 6 times a week, I barely have everything done at the end of the day after school, homework, taking care of my son, maintaining a home that gets trashed from a toddler's toys, laundry, fixing meals, cleaning up after meals. Plus when my husband was home I used to run a paper route every night to help bring in an income. These aren't excuses they are facts. Just because you have some extra weight doesn't mean your going to die, it means you human. Personally I want to die with my body used up, I want to be falling apart when I die so I can say "God I used the body you gave me to the fullest, I held nothing back, I was a good wife, and a good mother and I enjoyed ever second of what you gave to me. " Im not going to worry about all the "what ifs" about getting a cheeseburger because I'm in a rush to get my son to a doctors appointment. Because you can't take your body with you.

    Fat Military Wives

I've seen some hot military wives but I've seen some really fat ones who are usually officer wives. (If you're enlisted, you're probably in better shape and more exciting hence ability to snag a hottie.) Who wants to marry some dude who is liable to be sent to some godforsaken place like Fort Hood and has no real prospects of being rich? Fatties that's who. If you want a hottie, you had better have tons of game, be a SEAL or SF, or have met her before the military or something.

Why do people here make such gross generalizations?

While active duty military tend to have less of an obesity problem than civilians -- physical fitness standards are forced upon them -- the incidence of obesity within the dependent population closely mirrors civilians in general. They're not better or worse.

Why don't you ask the husbands of the fat wives?

  • 1 decade ago

This is a great question as some one who also has done 22 years on active duty retiring in June of 2005 , I can't even begin to tell you how bad the "fat wife" syndrome is in the Military. spouses of Military men are a representation of the service and should act and appear accordingly

there are plenty of heath and fitness centers on all bases

This overweight epidemic is killing americans , while i am no Tony Atlas here i am 43 years old 5'10 180lbs and run well over 20 miles a week and bike another 40+ it's about staying active turning of Oprah

    and making the effort

stress. lots and lots of stress. im not saying it right that they let themselves go. i let myself go after he started going on actual deployments. i sat at home and ate ice cream. it was my comfort food. but then i began to get use to the deployments and i didnt need any comfort food. i went out hiking and swimming and got back down to size but perhaps some women dont get use to it as easily.

well, the real question is why are so many americans PERIOD overweight? and we all know women have a different body composition than men and it is much easier for them to gain weight. but one thing that i think military wives deal with especially is enormous amounts of stress, as i'm sure your wife can identify with. i know many ordinary families are under stress, but it raises levels of cortisol which makes the body gain weight.

some military wives have the opposite effect. when my fiance first was gone, i lost 12 pounds in 3 months... down to 118, and THAT was disgusting. i looked afwul.

americans in general need to keep fit, it's not just military wives.
