Advice for "boarding" my friend's Corvette?

My friend is moving into a small rental after losing his house in the ARM mess. He wants to "board" his Corvette under my carport. How do I help my friend and still protect my liability regarding this precious possession? He will have a cover on the car, but it's still only a carport. I would want to be sure both our interests are protected, and that nothing would affect our friendship.

Update:

His car is paid for.

I own my home.

Update 2:

I have only one vehicle, so having another car there is not a problem.

I would draw up an agreement between you and your friend stating that you will in no way, shape or form be responsible for said car. Do Not accept money for said car, as this makes you a garage keeper in the eyes of the law and therefore completely responsible for said car. Spell out in this form that while ordinary and reasonable care will be taken of the car, he is no way to expect anything extraordinary from you. Spell out in this agreement exactly what your responsibilities are and then get it notarized after both parties have signed this agreement. That should do the trick. If he hesitates, let Him store the car someplace else.

It's possible yours is an exceptional case. Consult insurance agents. Generally: Your homeowners/liability insurance doesn't cover ANY car, not even your own. Damage to his car is going to have to be indemnified by his car insurance, which he probably can't have unless he keeps the registration current.

1st answer is going o result in them telling you it is not their problem.

he needs to call *his* insurance carrier and ask what to do. it is not your problem, except that your lease may require you to notify your landlord of any cars that you keep on the property. I have seen many leases that specifically prohibit keeping cars that are not registered, and also not registered to the lessee.

also, make sure your friend keeps the proper registration status on the tags, his insurance may depend on it.

Is it paid for? If he is losing his house in the ARM mess.. make sure that the repo company doesn't come knocking at your door.

Call your insurance carrier; let them know what you are doing; send him the bill with a disclaimer that says failure to keep this insured will result in loss of any liablilty on your behalf.
