Just one more thing; add this to your counter-measure arsenal:
Sandboxie
runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.
Use it for:
Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.
Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don't leak into Windows.
Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can't break out of the sandbox and can't infect your real system.
Windows Stays Lean: Prevent wear-and-tear in Windows by installing software into an isolated sandbox.
Freeware.
Not overly difficult to use.

There's no such thing as being 'over-protected' when dealing with computers. Simply put, the more protection the better. Don't take this the wrong way and download every bit of protection you can find, because some of them are viruses and open up your computer to threats.
Yeah, Avast is better.

no your not protected, and i'll explain why.
internet explorer.
you can have all the firewalls and anti-malware crap on your pc but since ie's connection to the net is never actively scanned problems can easily sneak through without you knowing through a host of exploits.
one of the main reasons for this because internet explorer is so intertwined with windows explorer. even Microsoft's own coders don't know where one ends and the other begins.
the best course of action is to stop using ie altogether and block it from the internet entirely.
use either opera or firefox, or use both.
since neither are connected to windows explorer in any way, nor do they use activeX. nasties have a much harder time getting into your system in the first place.

I would recommend Avast Free - it is a great program, and has stopped viruses on my computer in their tracks.
