What you would do if a potential employer asked you how much they should pay you?
I have a job that I(we) would love to have but after I refused to take straight commission(not in this economy) they asked me to do research and comeback with a figure for them. I already gave them my base pay and also pointed out I'm would be moving to a more expensive area of the country. My spouse would also have to quit his job and wait to be reemployed as well. The area I would be covering is not as profitable as the area I'm leaving. Should I just stick to base salary and forget commission or should I tell them to give me a figure and then counter offer. Thanks in Advance! Do employers typically do this or isn't it their job to figure what to offer?

First of all your needs are unimportant. The employer is looking for a reasonable salary expectation. If it is too low or too high you are out. Check the Internet for salary medians for the job you want to take. If you want to win and are good take the salary plus commission. The salary should meet your basic needs and commissions are based on your ability. I never hired on money but rather whether or not the candidate had the experience and the drive to meet the Company's goals. I always had the ability to make them reach their maximum potential, You did good not accepting straight commission. You have value that the Company needs. A straight commission job means that the employer can hire anyone and hope that someone "sticks". I would love to review your resume.

Its the company's job to do the research in regards to salary. I would have a base salary and commissions. I would try salary.com to figure out the base and then add 15% on top of that since your hubby has to be unemployed and make them pay for moving expenses etc.

Sounds like they just want you to support whatever you choose to ask for, which also demonstrates other skills to them as well. Go for it.
