What would you do about an employee who cost your company $3000 in fines from the client?
The admin asst where I work didn't do her job properly so now our client is extremely pissed....so pissed they are ready to cancel their contract. She took too damn long doing her job (permits/inspections) and now the client is hitting us with $3000 in backcharges...$1500 for each failed inspection on 3 houses. So $1500 for house #1, $1500 for house #2 which passed but we're getting backcharged anyway b/c she faxed over the wrong manual the 1st time. btw...I work for a residential contractor.
If you were the boss what would you have done about her?
She's been w/ the company for 3 yrs & handling permits for 2 yrs so she has no excuse. She got lazy & dropped the ball. This isn't the 1st time she screwed up. Last time was a different client 6 months ago and it cost the company $600. She claims the whole thing is a misunderstanding and miscommunication between the client, the city, and us. 2 subdivisions in this city...1 inspected by the city, the other by an engineering firm (claims she didn't know about this until 2 days ago). She told the boss that she was scheduling all inspections with the city until the client suggested it would be better and faster for us to sched inspections with the engineering firm. So she started doing it that way. It was 5 WEEKS before she finally called the city! ...and of course she claimed excuses...days off for vacation and to take dad to surgery.
Now she's put in a request for vacation for all next week!! As the HR rep, I'm tempted to reject it. ...but her boss is the vice president of the company.

If she is new and is still getting used to the responsibilities of her job, I would have a sit-down and explain the responsibilities in full to her. I would also not give her the usual 90-day raise.
If she has been there a while, is usually prompt about getting her work done, and does her work correctly, I would have a sit-down and see why she was having an off day. I would also have her personally call the client and explain why the inspections did not go through (because it was her fault) and have her tell them that it will NEVER happen again.
If she has been there a while and her work is usually "completed" in this manner, she should have been fired a long time ago.

It will create jobs. Health care jobs. Jobs for people to process the claims. It will help small businesses because it will make it easier for them to compete for good employees because benefits won't be such an issue. Any company that lays off workers because of this is a crappy company. Most businesses that size already offer insurance because they want to keep good employees. If they can do without 10% of their work force that easily, then they are not very good company managers. But as others have said, they don't have to pay for the insurance, just make it available. Why do you guys do so much lying? Talk about poor sports. By the way, you cons need to learn the real name: the Affordable Care Act. Modeled on Romneycare in MA. Ooops. The only companies who would do that are the con companies that hate their employees and don't want to keep good loyal ones.

When a client is pissed enough to fine you and possibly cancel the contract then someone is obviously NOT doing their job as they should. There is NO excuse for her to be making these major screw ups. The way I see it...she's lazy, imcompetent, and extremely stupid if she thinks she can smooth everything over by blaming the client and the city. Quite frankly if I were her boss I would have fired her @ss the first time the client fined the company. A client fining the company is a clear signal that she isn't doing her job at all.
As for all this crap about miscommunications and misunderstandings...fvck that. No such thing. It was HER RESPONSIBILITY to get this crap sorted out in the first place.
She NEEDS to be FIRED immediately!!! Don't blame me if your company goes bankrupt b/c of her laziness.

A very wise businessman once had a employee that made a huge mistake and lose the company a million dollars. The employee knew he was going to get fired when he got called into his office. After a long talk he said "I just spent a million dollars on your training, now never do that again!"
If you fire her and replace her with someone else, you never know what you'll get, but if she is a good worker and made an honest mistake, you have a worker that would not make the same mistake and probably be one of your hardest workers fromt hen on

Depends. Do I like her and is she usually competent?
If no, then maybe I can her.
If yes, then I would officially write her up, outlining the fines, the reasons and giving her an option to agree to an improvement plan or leave. The warning would also put her on notice that another charge could result in immediate termination.
But it isn't her fault the houses failed inspection, either--so, at least part of the fine is due to things beyond her control.

Well, having all the facts is where it starts. Is this is common thing for her to do, or is this is one-time slip-up? Were there extenuating circumstances that caused the delay, or was she just lazy? The best place to start is having a meeting with her to discuss what took place. You can then decide if it can be fixed, or if she needs to be replaced.

I would look at her job description to be sure what she did is an offense punishable by termination and then I would fire her.
Or if you think it was a one time mistake, maybe give her another chance with a reprimand and no raise next year.

Isn't the boss ultimately responsible for his employees work? He should double check her work if she is known to made errors at times.

My boss would have fired her, plain and simple. If she can't do her job properly she doesn't deserve to have a job in the first place.
