No its not hard I taught myself how to knit & I'm left handed! I used Knitting for Dummies. Later I did find someone to help me out with some of my questions and show me some new tricks. Get size 8 knitting needles and some yarn that you like make sure the yarn you pick matches the size needles you buy. (I say size 8 because you'll find many knitting projects call for a size 8 needles) Get a how to book or video you can even check out YouTube or http://www.expertvillage.com/ for visual aids.

Also check to see if you have a local yarn store a lot of places have beginners classes for both knitters and crocheters it shouldn't really cost that much maybe $10 or a little more - it depends on the store.

    Best of luck to you.

get a kit at the crafts store called "I Learn to Knit". It has needles, a skein of suitable yarn, a book and some other little items. then go to YouTube and in search box put in Learn to Knit and you will get loads of how to videos to go with the kit book so you can read and watch how to cast on, do knit stitch, do purl stitch and then the yarn overs and other more advanced stuff. It is actually very easy. I learned when I was a junior teen from a book I found in the library. No one else in my family knitted. I knitted up that skein or yarn, pulled it out and rolled it back into a ball until it was worn out. Then got some nice yarn and made things.

i learned to knit when i was 14, totally self-taught.

i got myself the Teen Knitting Club and the original Stitch 'n' B**ch (SnB books are highly recommended!!) books, plus a little Lion Brand pamphlet i found somewhere.

it took about a day to figure out the knit stitch... but because i'm an idiot, it took about another 6 months to figure out the purl stitch. (it's very unusual to take this long, don't let that number scare you!!)

i wouldn't necessarily call it "hard" to teach yourself, but you do need patience.

To get started, I would buy a ball of thick, chunky yarn without any messy frills in it, along with equally chunky needles, between sizes 11 and 15. i'd suggest starting with a basic scarf, as it has no shaping or finishing, but allows plenty of rows for practicing your stitches.

    good luck!

p.s. before you go in, be aware of the fact that there are two methods of knitting: american (or english/throwing) and continental (international/picking). if one method frustrates you too much, try the other. =)

If you have a JoAnne's craft store nearby, go there. Ask for the book, "I taught myself to knit." It's approximately $15. When you are there, buy a couple skeins of yarn. I prefer Red Heart.

The book has the knitting needles and everything you need to get started. Go home, read the book. If you have any question, go back to JoAnnes and ask for help.

    Also, practice, practice, practice!

This is what I did. I taught myself to knit. It was fun!

Nothing is difficult to learn. You need a desire, and you need good clear instructions. Some like text, some need visual aids.

Did you look on YouTube? There are tons of instructions on how to knit, and do all the rest of the things you need. How did you miss them?? There are all those other sites that have clear specific instructions and videos on every step along the way.

Yes, there are lots of people all around you that knit. Did you ask? They are not going to knock on your door forcing you to knit. You need to ask them first. You get nothing if you don't ask.

There are a number of websites that have instructions as well as videos that show how to cast on stitches and complete a project. One I found is www.knittinghelp.com/videos/learn-to-knit. I personally think that crochet is easier. You can google crochet instruction videos and get a number of sites. The reason I say videos, is that is is usually easier to see someone do the stitches than to read instructions and try to figure them out when you have never done knit or crochet yourself.

No - my roommate and I learned how to knit by watching someone teach it on youtube. Just type in "learn to knit" in the search bar!
