How is this possible?

I see posts here where young teens are scoring in the 70's and 80's. I play golf with a guy in his early 60's who can hit the ball 300 yds with a 3 wood and he scores in the 80's and 90's. He does get into trouble sometimes, but I don't think a teen's shot would have the same distance. What am I missing?

The scores you see posted here are largely "on my best day ever" scores. People are constantly posting their "low" scores and then asking if we think they are any good. As a high school coach I can tell you that the younger players give you the scores they think will impress you, not the everyday, average, actually counting every stroke scores that they really shoot.

Very possible. If you can't hit the green after your 300 yd drive, that driving distance does you know good. You have to be able to play all aspects of the game well to be consistently in the low 80's to high 70's. I can hit a 300yd drive but I am not exaclty sure where it is going to go (caddyshack type slice at times). Luckily the rest of my game is pretty decent so I can stay in the low 80's.

I think I know what the thing is. What would you post?

"I just barely broke 100 today, it sucked"

    "One time I shot a 70!"

we all would chose the answer that would make us look better, and us kids are more likely to brag, making us say it more often, until we say thats our average score. I'm sure there are some truthes in some of the scores, but there are also a lot of fibs in it too.

I have played with plenty of people that out drive me by 50 to 75 yards. I usually hit the green from 200 yards and in. I normally will 2 putt. They don't and so I win.

let just say there is a great deal of score fluffing that goes on in Y/A. Another thing......... I play with golfers of every age........a lot of them Out drive me distance wise.......few of them out score me........My drives are in the 260 -280 range......(Including roll out) the major difference is I am always in the fairway. My short game is something that has never gone away.......can't even remember the last 3 putt I had......... the upshot is....I don't care how far anybody drives the ball....what counts is low score......the other stuff is just hot air and gas.

I can also hit 250-275 yards with my driver but it is 150 yards straight and another ~100 yards to the right. Distance or power or age or your clubs make no difference. It is how accurate you are and how well you manage the course that matters.

    "Drive for show....putt for dough!"

It's all the things that happen "between" the tee box drive and sinking that putt on the green that decide the score!

I've shanked it off the tee many times and still scored par or better on the hole! I've also shanked it off the tee and scored a double bogie or worse!

    What a wonderful game!

its not how far you hit the ball
