If the Mormons are such good people, why did they massacre people?

I used to think the Mormons where great people because of their tv commercials. But I saw a movie with John Voight about a Mormon massacre. I didn't believe it was true until I looking it up on Wikipedia. I always thought the Mormons were chosen people like the Jews. Now I see they are like all the other Christians they claim to be better than.

You can compare Brigham Young guilt with OJ Simpson's first trial! HE GOT OFF! But still the proof is there! Read up, you will see.

Young taught and practiced blood atonement. He thought those in the Fancher party were enemies! and must be killed. read up. Thats the truth!

    Young Quote..

"Now take a person in this congregation who has knowledge with regard to being saved... and suppose that he is overtaken in a gross fault, that he has committed a sin that he knows will deprive him of that exaltation which he desires, and that he cannot attain to it without the shedding his blood, and also knows that by having his blood shed he will atone for that sin and be saved and exalted with the Gods, is there a man or woman in this house but what would say, 'shed my blood that I may be saved and exalted with the Gods?'

"This is loving our neighbor as ourselves; if he needs help, help him; and if he wants salvation and it is necessary to spill his blood on the earth in order that he may be saved, spill it.... if you have sinned a sin requiring the shedding of blood, except the sin unto death, would not be satisfied nor rest until your blood should be spilled, that you might gain that salvation you desire. That is the way to love mankind." (Sermon by President Brigham Young, delivered in the Mormon Tabernacle, February 8, 1857; printed in the Deseret News, February 18, 1857; also reprinted in the Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, pages 219-220)

Mormon murder mystery: Did Brigham Young order an 1857 Massacre?

    http://1857massacre.com/MMM/mormon_murder.htm

But now two authors who have studied the massacre say the prophet Brigham Young, the formidable church leader who built a Mormon kingdom in an oasis in the arid wilderness of the Rocky Mountains, masterminded the killings and then conspired to cover up his role.

"He was an absolute dictator," one researcher said. "Nothing happened in the place that did not happen under his direct orders."

Mormons are people. People are subject to fears.

Before you look at the Mountain Meadows Massacre, look first at the history before it. There was the Haun's Mill Massacre, the driving of men, women and children through terrible weather from home after home, events like the murder of Joseph Smith after being promised his safety, and an extermination order from Boggs (ie, any mormon found in Missouri would be killed and the person killing them not charged with murder in the least.) These events were even called the Missouri Mormon WARS. And the people in Utah were survivors who had seen the blood and seen America not protect them, and so had lost almost everything. Now...

The people moving through Utah were from Missouri. The frontier was hard, and the wells and the people drinking from them were getting sick (according to journals.) The mormons there believed that it was the Missourians poisoning these wells, but they never had proof (because it was born from fear, not facts. The Missourians weren't poisoning anything but people were afraid.) Someone organized a group who attacked and killed everyone above the age of 8 (the age of accountability in the Mormon church, or, those who were innocent and under 8 were allowed to live.) Was it right? No.

Want to read the Church's official stance on it? I'll include a link. It's most certainly not an event to be proud of, but it's also not one that should be hidden. The church helped to build a more permanent monument on the site, and helped to fund further exploration when they discovered the actual site (a bit of a ways away from the memorial.) There's nothing that can be done at this point other than to continue to remember that fear leads to horrible things, even from good people.

You really shouldn't base your views on a movie! There is certainly more to the story than someone just deciding to massacre. Fear makes even good people do bad things. The Mormons were persecuted continuously throughout the churchs humble beginnings. the church now strives to get beyond the past and move forward in a positive manner. The actions of a few people within the church during a time of great fear is not cause to judge the whole religion.

The Mountain Meadow Massacre was carried out by a small number of Mormon criminals. Most Mormons -- of course -- would NOT have obeyed those orders under normal circumstances. But you knew that.

look up Han's mill massacre and you wil understand, there use ot be a law where you could justkill a mormon, the mountain meadows massacre was bad but then again so was Han's mill. What started the mountain meadow's was han's mill and the arkansas in the wagon train well people in that state had killed a beloved missionary so they just killed the people in the wagon train for being from missouri (han's mill) and from arkansas (where the missioanry was killed)

first of all, that movie blew that thing WAY out of proportion.

The Mountain Meadow Massacre was a dark blot on LDS history. But, it is entirely understandable how they would have come to that sorry state. After the way that they were treated in Missouri and Illinois, and with some of the Fancher party allegedly boasting that they were part of those mobs.

ALL Christianity, including Mormons have been guilty of massacre.

There are idiots in every group. Brigham Young sent a message to leave those immigrants alone, but it got there too late.

You shouldn't base your opinion on something that happened over a hundred years ago.
