Christians (or anyone)...What is the value in waiting...?

Today at church my pastor was preaching about the whole Christmas story, and placed emphasis on the fact that, at the time, the world was dark and hopeless, and how man was waiting for the Messiah, and then of course God sent Jesus and was glorified.

Anyway, she went on to emphasize the value in waiting, and how God often uses hopeless situations and does something big and wonderful. (She gave other examples and talked about God making and keeping promises.) So my question is this....Why all of the drama? What exactily is the point, or the value in having to wait and wait for something? How is merely waiting for something supposed to make it so much better? And why do people seem to think that way?

Update:

Also, What does subnission have to do with it? Either you are submissive or you are not. One can be submissive (or not) regardless of whatever situation they are in?

Update 2:

Free Thinker, Good point, but that brings up another question...Why on earth does God want us to get our hopes up? That seems to be just asking for it (it being something bad). I mean He either does or does not (do anything) but what's the point of hoping for something He may or may not even do?

BTW I appreciate all of your answers. I don't mean to criticize or "knock them down." They just bring up good points to consider.

A lot of times the journey is more fun than the goal. For example you really look forward to a trip. Every day you wake up and are excited. Then you take the trip and you find you don't wake up looking forward to the trip anymore. You took it and it's over with. You might have great memories but it's different than looking forward to something. You'll figure it out in time.

More will be revealed. In the space, in the silence, in the clear of the waiting, there is no agitation, there is acceptance, there is awareness,

there is clarity, and then - when more is revealed, all things work smoothly together for the glory of God. Of course, for me, while I am

waiting, I also do what I would have been doing laundry, work, fellowship, etc. I continue to be interactive in all else, except for that in which I am

suspended, as it were, in the space of the waiting room. It is not unsure, it is not weak. There is a calm certainty that God IS more than enough in every situation. I either trust or I don't. And I find that out during the waiting. So I get to practice using my trust if it's shaky, and I get to rest in the trust if I'm not shaky.

    Thanks for a refreshing Q :)

The missing piece is that waiting is really attending as in a waiter or waitress. What you need to be doing between the "Amen" and the "There it is" is waiting-attending to God by bringing His Word to Him with a joyful expectation & thanksgiving in faith, knowing that God has answered your prayer and you will see the answer manifest. The other kind of waiting (as in just hanging around waiting for God to do something) is a dead end street without hope and it will destroy your faith in God.

  • Patience is a virtue. if you can learn to wait, you will be a peaceful person and a delight to be around. Patience is needed in this world. I'm sure you've heard of the saying..."good things comes to those who wait" It's not always good to get things right away. If we can't wait we get greedy.

Think of it as a heavenly lesson from God the Father Himself in patience... and submission to His Holy will.

Maybe it's just God teaching us to put all of our burdens onto Him, and to completely trust in Him. Submissiveness fits into the picture because when we are at our weakest, God is at his strongest in our lives.

    Appreciation.........

If you neither work for or await something, you tend to take it for granted.

It is a simple reality of "supply and demand"........the harder you must work for something, the longer you must "endure" to achieve your goal, the more valuable it is to you.

The "drama" is simply the retelling of the events that transpired during the wait. It is a daily occurrence somewhere for someone.

Because we must wait on The Lord, everything He does is done in His own due time.

Waiting Really TESTS your faith. if you pray for a million dollars once and got it , that would take no faith , but if you prayed daily for it for thirty years then that meant you were Faithful. God Bless
