Should I ignore my self control & just suck my thumb whenever I get the urge, even if in public?
What are the risks? Why are there any risks? I'm an adult.
Note, this is a 3 question question.
And why the heck is this any different than nail biting. It's not just because infants do it; infants giggle and that's not infantile, eh? I know that adults, lots of'm, suck their thumb. Maybe if we'd all do it out in the open people would change their ideas about its acceptability.
As for teeth. I wouldn't mind having bucked teeth because that simply means that my mouth changed to allow for a more comfortable fit. I can accept that totally.
And, for the jerks telling me to "grow up". I'm a successful business owner with an advanced degree who owns my home and won custody of his two children who are now successful on their own. I just enjoy the instant comfort that I feel with this posture (habit, if you will), do not harm anyone in doing it, and do not reflexively label it as infantile like some mind dead automaton. If you say that I should grow up, perhaps you should consider the advantages of having an open mind.

as a long-term thumbsucker... my teeth have moved (both bottom and top) - as they don't align, i can't bite things brilliantly and tend to use my side teeth instead
also, oddly, the thumb i used to suck is about 1cm smaller than the other one, and thinner too - i can fit rings on it that won't even go to the first joint of the other one (not sure if that's a pro or con!)
other than that, the only issues you're likely to come across are peole's perceptions of you - you may lose respect because of it.

Hey, I sucked my thumb until I was twenty! It is hard to give up because this is a habit you've had your whole life. Fair enough - it is a much healthier habit than smoking, or drinking, or using drugs, but it's still a bad habit. If there is something you do that makes you feel embarrassed, then you just shouldn't do it!
How would you feel about your partner seeing you suck your thumb? Or when you have children? That's what made me stop, I wanted my boyfriend to see me as elegant, grown up, sexy - not thumb-sucking! So even though I was with him for three years before giving up I never let him see me do it.
I think you should give up. Put a plaster on your thumb and keep one on for as long as you need it.

If you are comfortable sucking your thumb in public then there's no reason why you shouldn't do it if you want to.
There aren't any real risks if you are already an adult. Your teeth are in place now and probably sucking your thumb won't make any difference to them.
You're doing no harm to anyone. You do what you want to do and don't worry what anyone else thinks.

The only risks would be causing your teeth to go out of alignment (at least that is what my dentist tells me) and being made fun of.
