I have this friend at work who i go to lunch and breaks with. we have hung out outside of work 2 or 3 times. we talk about problems and everything, so we are close even though it is at work mostly. well i am broke this year and i didnt get anything for her. she brought me in a gift bag full of goodies- lotion, shimmer powder, hair goodies, etc. what do i do? is it rude to bring in something after Christmas? i feel bad, i know she understands, but still how do i fix this???

If you have the ingredients to cookies make some home-made cookies, that would probably mean a lot more to her than if you could afford to buy her something from a store. This year I am currently unemployeed but I still had enough money to get the 1 or 2 missing ingredients that I needed to make some cookies for them (besides they know to expect it) ;)

It happens. Make sure you thank her for the gift. You could drop by her house and bring some Christmas cookies or send a card.
I wouldn't give her something after Xmas because it seems like an after thought.
Just make sure she knows you liked her gift. Maybe ask her over after the holidays. Maybe she could use a closer friend.

Bring a small gift after Christmas, regift if you have to, OR pay for the next lunch when you can. I'm sure you told her Thank You, and Happy Holidays. Oh, by the way, my friend just came into my room and brought me a gift and I didn't get her one :( What do I do? :) happy holidays:)

This has happened to all of us at one time or another. It's really no big deal. I would probably not by a gift after Christmas but maybe take her out for a drink after work or to lunch one day.

well, if you bring in something after christmas, she'll know that you just ran out and got her something out of guilt. i would try to do something else to show appreciation. is her birthday soon? get her something you can afford for it. or pick up the tab for lunch next time you go out. or pick her up a starbucks on the way to work, and don't let her pay for it. something like that. and send a thank you card for the gift.

There is no rule that because she bought you a gift that you have to also buy her a gift. If you are feeling bad...tell her that you want to take her out for a Christmas lunch. Buy her lunch and you will be "even".

Be gracious, but not too much so, about accepting the gift. Thank you very much is what she wants more than the gift from you. Don't skip out on thanking her and leave the issue of you not having a gift in return out of the conversation. Say nothing about it.

i would still get her a gift after christmas and just say that srry i've been really busy and say ur gift was to go out to eat/get pedicures together or something better than just lotion and etc. If your gift is spending time with her she will cherish it more

It's not a big deal. Your friend is doing something nice for you. Maybe they understand that money is tight this year and they are trying to do a little cheering up. Although you can't afford anything for them in return, I cute card is always a nice gesture. Maybe one of those singing cards, and add a personal note thanking them. Good luck! =]
