Why do you (personally) drive a car?

Recently I've come to see more and more the blight that cars are on humanity. Feet, bikes and public transport are infinitely better than cars for a good many reasons. However, in most North American cities cars account for upwards of 90% of travel. As someone who's interested in the elimination of cars, I want to know why this is. So my big question to you is: What would it take to get you to ditch your car?

Update:

Woah, woah, woah, you have me all wrong here. I'm not trying to force my views on you. Heck, I drive a car quite often because it's pretty much the only option where I live. I understand that people can't just drop their cars and continue to live their lives. What I want to know is WHY you can't just drop your car. Do you have no transit where you live? No sidewalks? Just love your car too damn much? My point is, what would have to change for you to view other ways to travel as a viable option?

Nothing is going to get me to 'ditch' my car. I restore and drive classics.

It would be advisable to stop forcing your views on others with such a pessimistic attitude. You'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

EDIT: Although your point is valid in some aspects it is also not realistic in others. I have lived in the Southwest for a number of years now and it is completely unreasonable to expect someone to walk or bike 25 miles to work one direction. Carpool wouldn't work either because most people live miles apart. If you were walking on the I-10 people would mistake you for a vagrant or illegal.

I also spent a number of years living in Hollywood, CA (using the Metro) and again dreams of a functioning public transport system are just that dreams. Such a huge metropolis is not set up for that kind of lifestyle. There are no stops and no routes to go places that are useful.

I did enjoy taking the Metro because of the convenience but I had to leave town by 8 pm or I would be stuck there until 5 am when the next train started running again. The bus however I never enjoyed, it was scary and gross and the people were disgusting.

Also the Southwest does not have a forgiving climate. Summers are a lovely 100F + and monsoon season typically brings flash floods. It is not uncommon to hear about illegals dying of heat and dehydration during the summer and people getting swept away down a drainage ditch during heavy rains.

Car is the only way that meets all my needs. Retired

    1) Live in suburb, nearest shop 5 miles,

No public trans., too far to walk, rainy climate, no strength to bike hill. Need carry space when shopping.

    2) Car is diverse "freedom machine" our economy, society depends on mobility. What's choice, horses? tried that in 1900, Think car exhaust causes pollution, Try streets filled with MILLIONS of horses.

    3) Ideal: Mini-vehicle, electric or hybrid. Plug in, PLUS Internal combustion to charge battery AND provide output electric power to house like a standby generator.

I very own a keep, a race automobile & truck, and function long gone so rapid it grew to become into like a distinctive international. At those speeds no person is finding on the speedometer, they're too busy paying interest to the place the motor vehicle is going. I genuinely have one hundred sixty on my speedometer, and that i've got had it a protracted techniques previous this. It gets to a element to the place the automobile looks like its floating on the line, and you're aiming it, not utilising it. i've got been to approximately one hundred fifty on the line, yet plenty quicker on the song, yet it fairly is a distinctive form of place to force. do not attempt to bypass any quicker on your street tires, as they're going to come aside at huge time speeds. What has consistently in contact me is; a great dogs or deer working around the line in front of me at that velocity... then what? think of long & difficult till now going plenty quicker than a hundred on any roads that different all of us is on, considering the fact which you by no potential understand what they're going to do. once you're passing automobiles that are doing 70 like they are going backwards, then you definately are on the mercy of them not changing lanes. Any rapid turn of the guidance wheel at that velocity is a confident wreck. i've got wrecked going over a hundred thirty mph till now, and it appeared the motor vehicle wrecked for 10 minutes, and the reality of that's, the right of the motor vehicle grew to become into mashed down against the right of the front seat, and that i grew to become into trapped interior it for a protracted time with gas leaking out of the tank. fortunate? yep! happy to function my 2 cents nicely worth!!!

Oh, I agree with you! My V8 jaguar that gets 16mpg is a blight on this planet.

Would I get rid of it? NOPE!

No seriously...unless there is a convenient, cheap & PRIVATE means of transport that comes along...I'll keep driving.

Why on earth would I want to be surrounded by chavs & screaming kids on a public bus?
