yea plastic wrap pressed down right on the custard works real well. also when the custard is still hot, you can sprinkle a little sugar on the surface, without mixing it in. the sugar melts a little and keeps the skin from forming

I second (actually third) the saran or cling wrap. Press it against the top, but don't push into the custard, just make sure that it covers the top. I've been using this trick for years, and it has never failed

My Mom used to put a piece of plastic wrap across the top to keep the "skin" from forming. It worked quite well.
