How do I determine if my laptop battery is defective, or if the computer isn't charging it?

I bought a used Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop a few months ago. Its battery was completely dead. I ordered a new one on eBay which was charged when I received it. It ran for a couple of hours with the new battery, but won't recharge. Is it possible the battery is bad or is it most likely the computer? The AC adapter powers the computer fine when plugged in.

HP notebooks have a feature "HP Battery Check" it checks if the battery is charging properly. I don't know if Dell has anything similar.

You bought a battery from Ebay. Well, Ebay is the worst place to buy laptop batteries because most sellers will sell you used or refurbished batteries that they will market as 'new'.

If your computer is running on AC power, your adaptor is fine. Your battery connections are fine too, considering the laptop ran with the new battery (albeit for a little while, but still, this disproves the hypothesis that your battery connections are defective).

The problem is that you are out of luck - you were probably shipped a refurbished battery which looks new but which has minimal or zero battery life.

You need to get a new battery for your Dell Inspiron 6000. You need to buy it from a cheap battery store which sells only new C.E. certified battery.

You can find a high capacity Inspiron 6000 battery at BatteryHippo.com for $72 and it comes with free shipping:

If you bought 2 completely new batteries and they only lasted a few hours, it is most likely your computer. Laptop batteries last days and days without being charged. You might just need to charge it every hour or something. I would have a professional look at it just to be sure

    Hope I helped

It seems to me it is not the problem of the battery. It is the problem of the charger of your computer.First check all connection then check the charge light(start charge the light should be on when full will change to green) also check the battery icon on your rt hand side on window and tick on it will see how many time or % of powder still has and show any change after charge). It will give you some information about the condition.

one among my buddy is having the comparable situation. His charing port has malfunctioned. Get it to a technician to look at. yet verify your charging cable too, in yet another supported laptop.
