Jacoby - don't use the Olympics as your gauge, use ALL tournaments

    Since 1977 (Canada's re-entry to International Competition)

    World Championships

    19 Sweden (5-9-5)

    16 Canada (5-6-5)

    12 Czechoslovakia (2-4-6)

    10 Soviet Union (8-1-1)

    10 Finland (1-6-3)

    8 Czech Republic (5-1-2)

    5 Russia (2-1-2)

    3 Slovakia (1-1-1)

    2 USA (0-0-2)

    World Juniors

    24 Canada (14-6-4)

    14 Soviet Union (9-3-2)

    13 Russia (3-6-4)

    12 Finland (2-4-6)

    12 Sweden (1-7-4)

    11 Czechoslovakia (0-5-6)

    5 United States (1-1-3)

    3 Czech Republic (2-0-1)

    1 Slovakia (0-0-1)

Let's Look at the Canada Cup/World Cup

    7 Canada (5-2)

    2 Soviet Union (1-1)

    2 United States (1-1)

    1 Czechoslovakia (0-1)

    1 Sweden (0-1)

    1 Finland (0-1)

If you take the winning percentage at the World Ice Hockey Championships since 1977, Canada has a higher winning percentage than any country, including the combined Soviet/Russian record (Russia has not been the same since the satellite countries left).

Bob, You can pick it up on the NHL Network. Most US based cable providers are now offering it although it is usually not part of the basic package. They are showing almost every Canada and USA game.

Yeah. Since winning at the 1952 gms the last really before the europian team became major factors Canada has 1 gold medal (at the 2002 gms in Salt Lake City)

    Meanwhile other countries

The US and Sweden have each won 2 gold medals well the Czechs also have 1

The Soviets/Russia have 8 (1956, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1984, 1988, 1992 (Unified team of former soviet countries). Granted though all came when the soviets basically had pros vs. amateurs

Excluding russian teams since 1956 here are the medal totals of each country

    Gold:

    USA 2

    Sweden 2

    Czechloslovakia/Czech Republic 1

    Canada 1

    Silver:

    USA 3

    Canada 3

    Czechslovakia/Czech Republic 3

    Sweden 1

    Finland 1

    Bronze:

    Czechslovakia/Czech Republic 4

    Sweden 3

    Canada 2

    Finland 2

    West Germany 1

    In total amount of medals

    Czechslovakia/Czech Republic 8

    Canada 6

    Sweden 6

    USA 5

    Finland 3

    West Germany 1

    Using medal value totals (Gold-3, Silver-2, Bronze-1)

    Czech Republcic 13

    USA 12

    Sweden 11

    Canada 11

    Finland 4

    West Germany 1

    Canada's not the best.
