A question for pantheists?

When you identify yourself as a pantheist, what are the most common misperceptions you deal with?

Online and in real life....

I'm still waiting for someone to ask me about underwear thefts. ....

But seriously? Most people are unfamiliar with the term. I've not encountered much confusion outside occasional blurring of pantheism (all is god) with panenthism (which proposes that god encompasses but extends beyond the Universe) and the differences between Classical (God is in all) and Natural (the Universe is interconnected but not divine) views.

Heck, I'm none to rigid on the latter two myself, sometimes talking in 'god-y' terms and at others taking an atheistic stance.

But I don't mind. It's just my beliefs. It doesn't worry me if few others get it.

    .

Source(s): Oh, yeah. Like Lady Morgana, I too blame you for setting me on a Pantheistic path! Or at least lending my beliefs a label I could work with. So thank you!
  • Atheist wandering through, pardon.

This is a very intriguing question, and it's sent me off to find out what pantheism is all about. After a bit of reading, I see that it's rather how I've always lived my life, but for some reason I identify with atheism more than with pantheism.

I do believe in an interconnected web of existence, that each and every atom is part of the same universe, and that each individual human is equally imbued with presence (for lack of a better word) in this universe.

I guess the only thing that sets me apart is that I'm not prepared to acknowledge a creative intelligence exists as a causative agent, either within or outside of the known universe.

Any pantheists willing to further enlighten me, I'd be more than happy to continue this via e-mail.

So I deduce you are or you are leaning toward pantheism?

Actually in my book "God's Ancestors" the Entire Planet H (Heaven) is full of folks who could be considered "Gods" by our standards. The planet was formed 13 billion years ago, shortly after our universe was formed and 8 billion years before Earth was seeded, so by evolution?? -- Does evolution eventually reach eternal life?

(Now I have to research "Pantheism" -- fair is fair --- chagrin.

Whoops I missed that one. (I got Poly mixed up with the Pan)

while most persons who self-identify as "pantheist" alone (rather than as members of another religion) are of the naturalistic variety. The division between the three strains of pantheism are not entirely clear in all situations, and remains a source of some controversy in pantheist circles. Classical pantheists generally accept the religious doctrine that there is a spiritual basis to all reality, while naturalistic pantheists generally do not and thus see the world in somewhat more naturalistic terms. --- source unknown cause I just Googled about 6 sites and I forgot which place I found this excerpt.

    Dear UP,

I must first tell you that you were one of the first inspirations I had to look into pantheism. Another person said it sounded like that was what I was, based on my description of my beliefs, and I remembered you.... interesting.

Misperceptions include the one most of us have encountered, which is that a pantheist is a polytheist, believing in this whole Roman Colosseum filled with gladiators and soon-to-be-dead Christians and the whole bunch. It is the word, unfortunately, which causes this fck up.

Then of course the bunch that think I worship Pan. Not true.

One smart *** asked me if there were Pot-theists too. Ha ha, I said, you want me to whack you upside the head with one?

Many are clueless and are polite enough to be honest about their lack of information, and to ask what pantheism is. I like them.

Some think that it is a form of paganism (yes) that includes worship of gods and goddesses) false. Some think that I worship trees. Revere, yes, worship, no.

Most of these have occurred in life, but a fair number of the uinformed are here, and I have encountered the largest number of them within the Christian community (surprise surprise) and when comrrected and/or educated, they naturally stick to their own opinion anyway so why bother?

Thank you for sending me to pantheism, it is where I live spiritually speaking!

    Lady Morgana

PS the last BA you gave me is one of those that keeps coming up again and again as duplicate BAs, the phenomenon that has Yamster by the short curlies..... alas, when will they fix that? LM

i'm an atheistic Pantheist, any truths approximately our origins have been, and could proceed to be won from technology. I carry great reverence for the Universe as our author even though it is lots previous being a G/god. All G/gods are delusion and the creation of guy. G/gods continuously have human traits. The author, is a organic stress which predates human existence by ability of a protracted time. there's no information that a human character hovers above us with an the two human schedule. I do although understand guy's desire to humanize his author.

So...are there any pantheists answering here?

Since pantheist thought is that...God is all. Everything of nature, universe, beings, the One Light (aka God) is all one...We are all one...Any thought separations are really varied aspects (and beliefs) of the same oneness....We are not THE One Light (God) yet we are Of the One Light (God)...the One Light (God) is pure Love, pure Light and energy...That Love is not of physical form...The One Light (God) simply Is.

Common misperceptions that might be associated with that?

Some misperceptions might be that God is separate from us. That God is separate Divine being. People look and pray out to God with little to no awareness that God is within all beings. The "all are one" concept is not understood and/or not agreed with my many.

Varied beliefs . . .such is the way of the world.

Oneness is there just the same.

You chose to seek replies in relation to a not commonly known word (pantheist).

When using uncommon words, people generally also include meaning such words in their posted question . . .Definition was not shared in your posting . . .

Seeking answers or sharing a new word with others?

Is that a "misperception" of your posting or is that "real life"?

Just a suggestion...additional information included in "questions" will bring in answers...If answers is what's truly being sought.

It's hard enough to find people who know what it is, misperceptions are perfectly normal.

Then there's technically differences in perception of what Pantheism would be among pantheists.

My wife is a pantheist. What a coincidence. lol

I've seen lots of people here who have absolutely no idea what a pantheist is.

  • I don't claim to be anything. I am just one of faith in God. I don't wish to be anything other than, just me. :D

I came here hoping to learn what a pantheist is. But there is really no clear description in your answers. I could research this but, I guess I am not interested enough to look it up. lol!

Misperception of panentheism and pantheism as being the same.
