Question about extinction?
What is the longest amount of time that any living creature (other than plants) weighing more than two pounds has lived on the planet before becoming extinct and what was that animal?
Thanks for the answer about alligators, etc. According to this alligator have been around for 150 million years: http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/visitus/alligators....
Any animal top that?
Lemmings I think are still with us but have been around nowhere near 150 million years. Dodo birds, the moa and mammoths I also do not believe were around for 150 million years. So far alligators are still the winner. How long were certain species of dinosaurs around?
But how long are two extinction periods?

Sharks have been around for about 400 million years. I don't know if they have been around longer than any other species, but they definitely top alligators.

The Lystrosaurus survived 2 extinction periods.
The Lystrosaurus rex is the common ancestor for all of the advanced life forms on Earth today. It's safe to say it is still here today, just evolved into you and me and all of the other advanced life forms.
