The Lord of the Rings vs. The Chronicles of Narnia vs. Harry Potter - Which is your pick?

I know some people might find me ignorant for asking this question, but we all know that in the realm of fantasy, Tolkien, C.S Lewis, and Rowling are the titans of writing and imagination. All three of them deserve great respect for bringing such compelling books into the work of literature, so by picking a favourite, I'm in no way trying to degrade one series of books while favouring another... I adore them all (somewhat). No matter how short or how long they are, they all have, to an extent, great meaning to them.

Please rank them in order of you favourite, and if you life, please tell me why you choose that order!

    I think probably

    1)-Lord of the Rings

    2)-Chronicles of Narnia

    3)-Harry Potter

No offence to any harry potter fans out there but I just think that Lord of the RIngs is so much more original and Tolkien is such a great author! Harry Potter is great, but you can totally see where she gets her ideas from.... but I love all three series =]

LOTR is top. Tolkien wrote an epic that has withstood time--I read it for the first time back in the late 60's and have to reread it (Hobbit through Return of the King) every 5 years or so. It is a well-crafted story and Jackson did a superb job bringing it to the screen. He didn't take short-cuts, he didn't skimp on animation so it fits seamlessly into the live stuff, you came to care about the characters to the point where you got emotionally involved (just like in the books). The books, of course, have far more details and even more side stories (Tom Bombadill for example) which were not included in the movies. HP. I didn't even start reading the books until Prisoner because I was convinced it was a mere children's story. Wrong! I was hooked and had to get my hands on the next installment as soon as it came out, even took a few days off from work so I could stay up and read the new book all the way through without sleeping, then crash for a day or two after. Again, the characters are full and honest, bad guys are evil and powerful, but the good guys are powerful too but mostly because they love each other and support each other and stick together to conquer. As far as the movies go, some of the directors have been better than others, a whole lot is missing from the movies that give the books so much more depth. Having them in 3D doesn't hurt any either. I want my movies (and books) to grab me and immerse me in their fantasy, which both LOTR & HP did. I continue to have the need to play these two movies and I'm so glad for DVDs. I did not like Narnia. I have never liked Narnia. I didn't like it when I read it as a young person. I didn't like it when I reread it right before the movie came out. I don't like the movie (haven't bothered to see the second one). And I can't really tell you why. There's something "forced" in both of them, and I always feel very very manipulated. I read Lewis' Perelandra, That Hideous Strength, Out of the Silent Planet trilogy and liked that the first time around, not so much the second. There's just something about Lewis' stories that just feel too dishonest, like he himself could not get wrapped up enough in his fantasy to believe in it.

Harry Potter - it means more to me than all of the others. I'm fourteen so I'm from that era, Harry Potter was a huge part of my childhood and now that it's over, it's really sad. I got Tales of Beedle the Bard for Christmas and it was great to be re-introduced to the character of Dumbledore for a few pages, it was a really nice feeling.

The Lord of the Rings - One of the most amazing things about fantasy is that there are no limitations, Tolkien really took advantage of that and, when you look at the whole psychology behind LotR, it's really quite fascinating, how the real world at the time of Tolkien links to Middle Earth.

The Chronicles of Narnia - Of all fantasy books, this is one of my least favourite. I just don't think it's fantasy enough, do you know what I mean? I don't know, I just don't think that CS Lewis took advantage of the fact that when you write fantasy, the limit is as far as your imagination goes. Just my opinion, though.

Good question and happy new year

im going to go with lord of the rings followed by harry potter. i dont know where to put narnia because i have never read it. i think harry potter was an easier book to read and was harder to put down and that lord of the rings is a book that can turn people off and you really have to get into, but the detail was incrediable and i love the story. not that this matters to the question but the movies were also a lot better then the harry potter movies, which left out way to much.

    1) Harry Potter

    2) LOTR

    3) Narnia

Lord of the Rings probably deserves to be first because it required to make up a whole different world, even several whole new languages! But I really just loved Harry Potter so much more. I though the Fellowship of the Ring was sort of slow actually, and I loved every single HP book. I didn't even like Narnia that much in the first place.

Whoever might find you ignorant in asking this question will be ignorant themselves.

I have to say Harry Potter, because I read them over and over again. I love Lord of the Rings, but not as much as HP, and although Narnia is fantastic (I especially liked The Magician's Nephew), I find so much more enjoyment in reading HP.

So, my order would be Harry Potter, Narnia, and then Lord of the Rings.

Fantastic question. You get a star!

    A three way verse? Cool.

Well, I think my list goes like this:

    1. Harry Potter

    2. Narnia

    3. Lord of the Rings

I think Harry Potter is just so much more lively and humorous and it really kept me interested more than the other two.

Narnia is okay. I really loved the movies but the books were a drag. However boring, C.S. Lewis deffinately is a genius writer.

Lord of the Rings was just plain boring, bookwise. The movies were ok but seriously, I've never been much of a Lord of the Rings fan.

They're all excellent series though and my top favorite!!!!

lotr - pure genuis. beautiful, sweet, tragic and heartbreaking all at once. exciting and intelligent and with moments of pure comic genius and really touching friendships. although i think taking 20000 words to alk abou tthe council of elrond was a tad excessive.

harry potter - sweet, easy to read, easy to realte to. and it got millions of children to read, some of which had never picked up a book before. more than that, it got kids EXCITED about books. they ghave thier flaws, and they are by no means the best written books in eh world, but they are alraight.

narnia - i used to love the narnia books when i was a kid. but re reading them as an adult has given me a differenet persepcitive on them. they are incredibly sexist and treat women badly, portraying them in a bad light. in particular when susan doesn't go back to narnia because she is more interested on stockings and parties. gien the massive religious bent of the books, narnia is obviously heaven, so the moral of the story there is girls who like girly things don't get to go to heaven.
