Burned picture files on DVD not recognized by other computer?

Ok internet, I need some advice.

I have a desktop computer is a 2004 HP with Windows XP. All my photo files and music files are stored on this computer. For a few weeks this summer, it was out of commision...so I used my husband's 2008 HP laptop with Windows Vista to download my photos from my vacation.

I am trying to make a master photo backup for the year..so I want to take the few files I have on the laptop, copy them to the desktop and then copy the files on a DVD. The problem is when I copy the photos from the laptop onto a DVD, then put them into my desktop DVD drive...it states that the DVD is blank. I put the DVD back into the laptop...it states the picture files are on there.

What's going on??

The disk has to be "closed". If left opened, other computers won't recognize it.

As in, the "session", the recording, has to "ended".
