Can I get the smell of cat urine out of clothes by simply putting them in the washing machine?

I've just washed a load of clothes, some of which my cat had peed on - but I think I can still smell the cat urine - should it be gone after a good machine wash or am I imagining it?

You aren't imagining it. Cat urine is very, very hard to get out of anything. Soak your clothes in oxy and hot water for at least half an hour prior to washing, and during the rinse add a capful or two of an enzyme-based deodorizer that you would use for pet messes. If you can, dry your clothes outdoors as the sun is a natural deodorizer.

try to soak the clothes in warm water first for some time with 1/2 cup vinegar (or more,if you like) and 1/2 cup baking soda. It will foam a lot at first, but will die down. the reaction of the acid with the soda removes nasty smells completely from even things like old plastic thermal coffee cup when the coffee was left in it for ages, and that's the only thing that works completely! So try it on clothes - WARNING - if the clothes are a darkish colour, the vinegar with hot water will make the colour come out a lot and stain your other stuff, so for darker stuff maybe try just a little baking soda in cold or lukewarm water. You can try adding just half a cup of vinegar to your wash machine, hopefully it'll work too. Hope my answer makes some sense :~0

Don't put that load in the dryer yet, or it will set the smell in.

I suggest getting hold of an enzymatic cleanser such as Nature's Miracle. You can use that in the laundry for that load, and it will truly clean the urine out. I had to wash a winter coat this way last winter when my cat had an accident all over me at the veterinary clinic. Worked like a charm.

It wouldn't hurt to wash them twice, you could add a little disinfectant to the drawer where you put the powder, and wash on the hottest wash that the clothes can take usually 30-40 or 60. Make sure you dry the clothes properly because if they are lying round damp they will smell. Your probably imagining it, but better to wash again for your peace of mind xx

  • If you wash them with biological (enzymatic) washing detergent that should remove the smell completely as the enzymes break down the fatty deposits contained in cat urine.

    DON'T DRY THEM!

Wash them again in cold water with a cup of white vinegar in the washer. The vinegar will help get rid of the smell. You may want to wash them a second time, just to be safe. Once you dry them in the dryer, though, the smell is permanent. Good luck!

Run it through the washing machine again and if you think you can still smell the cat pee ditch the clothes and the cat!

You are probably just thinking about it too much. But if you are worried wash them again and let them air dry instead of putting them in the clothes dryer. The fresh air will make sure they don't smell.

cat urine can be difficult to get rid of-try putting white vinager in water when washing-if this doesn't work, then put clothes in a vinager bath to soak for a couple of hours, then wash again
