If God created both marriage and sex, why didn't he program us not to have urges before marriage?

Because it's a test, right?

Imagine this. I push two buckets in front of you, one full of rose petals, and one full of rusty nails and salt. Now I tell you that you have to stick your hand in one. If I loved you, would I even offer to rusty nails and salt? Of course not, I'd only offer the rose petals.

At the time the Bible was written, several things were different from today. First and foremost, people were married right around or shortly after puberty, not later in life like today. Also, if a woman were "found" to be a virgin (they checked the status of the hyman, which is NOT an accurate way of telling) she was totally disgraced if not stoned to death. The fear of literally being stoned to death was enough, Im sure, to keep girls from having sex before marriage.

Well to be completely fair, albeit a bit harsh, in those days when not as many people had sex outside of marriage because it wasn't socially acceptable, most men married because of those urges. I think even today, without those urges, most men would not want to get married.
