When buying a new laptop, how many GB's of Ram is decent?

for an average user 1GB would be enough in most cases, 2GB would be very decent and now I am seeing some laptops with 4GB but won't be useful for average users.
I am running Windows 2008 server, and sql server 2008 on my laptop with 1GB RAM. If I want to run multiple instances of VMWare then I would need more memory. But this is not a profile of an average user.
Hope this helps.

You will want 4 gb especially if the laptop has Windows Vista.

1GB suffices for most users, and you can always upgrade - check www.crucial.com for the cheapest RAM around. Upgrading to 2, 3 or 4 GB make the computer run much snappier.

no less than 2. u can get laptops with 3 for only like $700. 4 is overkill unless u game or use very intensive programs

the most I've ever seen offered in a laptop is 4 gigs, but that is the best amount to have no matter what OS you're using for a laptop
