Driving on the motorway at night?

If a person visiting you said they cannot stay long because they don't like driving on the motorway at night time would you find it a lame excuse? Especially when they have driven for many years and are fine with motorways during the day. My family always get together each year and the rest of my family laughed when this person who is my cousin said this. Do you think they are mean for thinking like this or not? A competent driver should be able to drive in all conditions otherwise they shouldn't be driving they say, are they right?

Update:

Just want to add it is not me judgeing my cousin this way it was a couple of members of my family, who am I to judge? I have never even driven on a motorway by myself before lol.

Update 2:

I am glad I am not alone in agreeing that they were being mean to judge her this way, I also found it a bit mean of them to say it is silly to not want to drive on the motorway at night. I can imagine that motorways are scary enough in the day let alone at night, and she had to drive with her 2 young children in the car, plus she is driving a new bigger car that she is still getting used to. It seems I have a mean family lol.

Update 3:

AGAIN I REPEAT FOR THOSE WHO ARE ATTACKING ME.

I CLEARLY STATED BEFORE IT IS NOT ME WHO SAID THESE COMMENTS! IT WAS FAMILY MEMBERS THAT SAID THEM!

Sorry to shout but clearly some people have not clearly understood my question or took any notice of the additional details that I have added!

Some people are severely affected by glare at night and some people suffer from what they call night blindness where their vision is impaired and they can't see as well. Humans (and most animals) have tiny sensors in their eyes called Rods and Cones - google it -- which determine your visual acuity at night as well as your ability to differentiate colors at night.

I don't think it's a lame excuse and I do understand that you didn't say it. Motorways are awful at night, they are boring enough during the day. People have seen things on motorways that aren't even there, that's why so many accidents happen. I think your Cousin is very wise if she feels unsure, better to be safe than sorry.

It can be dangerous at Night, that is when most of the Crashes occur . Especially in the Early Morning with People making Mistakes, also Loads of Drunks on the Road.

Also when a Person gets into a Car their Eyes are not properly Adjusted for awhile to the Night time and are probably Blurry from being indoors.

So I dont Blame them for being a little Apprenhesive.

Different drivers have various likes and dislikes.

Personally, I love driving at night. Give me a car with good headlights and I'm happy, less cars on the road, mostly HGVs, the drivers of which mainly know what they are doing, unlike Jack Salesman in his 'Audeo' hogging the outside lane!!

I don't like town driving, Snow, Rain, etc.

Lucky yes but does luck hold out ? The whole point of not speeding is you don't have time to react to say a child running out on the street or a car that just didn't see you. And if you wreck at that speed < heck a rock could tumble you > how long do you think it would take the E.M T's to peel you out ? Do us all a favor and go the speed limit .

    Hi

Driving at night is completely different to driving during the daytime, distances are harder to work out and then there's added eyestrain from the headlights of other vehicles and if this is how your family treats it's visitors I'm not surprised they want to leave early, at least they made the effort in the first place.

It is not a lame excuse, it is quite scary to drive that fast at night in the dark. I know lots of people who refuse to do it (mainly older members of my family). If they are a new driver as well, it can be very scary.

Even if it is an excuse, does it matter? If they don't want to be there, let them go!
