Your 3rd answerer is true because I had horrible, terrifying dreams for the longggest time until just this past year after talking to my therapist for a while and venting out my personal problems. I also started writing in a journal about what bothers me and my issues. I don't know if you have any big issues, but if not, maybe you should still try writing your thoughts and feelings down before you go to bed and write something positive at the end so then you won't have much more to think about. Granted, some of my problems that affected my life were beyond my control, but the point is that I started not to care and just relax overall which really set my dreams in another direction.

I'm sorry but it would be hard to not have dreams whether you like them or not. Has this been happening just recently, just out of the blue? Maybe you need to look back on them and confront them. You can't run away forever. Your dreams may help you deal with the stresses in your life (whether you're aware of them or not) and hopefully, your bad dreams will leave you alone.

I get alot of nightmare material too, they reckon it may be part of the bipolar or whatever. I've managed to develope the ability to block (or fog) out alot of the detail of what those things are, you can probably develope these methods overtime, though I'm not sure if it's really explainable or if the situation may differ from person to person. You'll have to find your own path on that, I think.

I don't always block things, though. Nowadays I don't really care. I go to sleep, I dream,if it's scary when I wake up it's gone and it's not life threatening. Often in my dreams too I can be aware on some level that I'm dreaming, so that's good.

Bad dreams occur for many reasons. Sometimes something in your diet can cause bad dreams. Sometimes stress can cause bad dreams. Sometimes medication can cause bad dreams, especially medication for depression or anxiety, though some others can do it too. I have bad dreams when I take cold medicine. Sometimes depression and anxiety themselves can cause vivid dreams and nightmares. I heard of one person who had bad dreams every time their blood sugar was low. Caffeine or alcohol can cause bad dreams if you consume them shortly before bed (3-4 or less hrs before bedtime.) In other words, there are many reasons why you may be having bad dreams, and maybe if you play around with your lifestyle, you can figure out why you are having bad dreams. Once the underlying problem is fixed, then your bad dreams will go away.

You can't stop them, all dreams are good, it's only your interpretation that makes them bad. If they are bothering you that much you may want to get help to better understand them. Dreams have great messages and can help you deal with a real life issues. Usually bad dreams are because you are afraid of something in your waking life, they can help you heal that fear.
