Are you for real, [Belinda R]???

    ● Unless your bit.ch has been neutered, she will have heats aka seasons. They average about 3 weeks twice a year, but can be highly variable as to frequency (anything from every 3 months to just once a year) and duration.

Each heat starts with blood drips while the bit.ch's vulva swells and she eagerly piddles everywhere to lay a scent trail that dogs wandering loose can use to find her. That period lasts about a week, during which she will flirt but only rarely allow penetration. Then comes a usually-bloodless week when she is frantic to be mated, followed by a week during which her vulva shrinks and she returns to no longer being willing to mate. However.....

    • My foundation brood liked to be mated on her 3rd day on heat.

    • The dam of my youngest mated my stud before she had dripped any blood at all.

    • A bit.ch I sold was kept isolated for 28 days. On day 30 she mated her kennel mate and became pregnant.

So I hope your yard is fenced to keep her IN and to keep stray dogs and stray brays OUT! And I hope you were sensible enough to always drive your bit.ch at least a long block away before walking her..... For the next 3-4 weeks she must NEVER be loose unsupervised.

If she has allowed a dog to penetrate her vulva there is a 3-spaced-out injections course that will prevent any fertilised ova from implanting their placentas. But its most likely side-effect is that she will come back on-heat almost immediately. So TOTAL avoidance of mating is the preferred course.

As she was GIVEN to you she is definitely not of breeding quality, so SHOULD be neutered - but not while she is on-heat. Study the research links in http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/... about the possible side-effects of neutering at various ages, then work out the best age at which to have your bit.ch neutered.

    ● If you bit.ch HAS been neutered then she has a serious urinary tract infection and needs to be taken to a vet TODAY.

She is most likely in heat.Keep her away from any male dogs for another two weeks and then call your vet and make an appointment to have her spayed asap.Female dogs go through heats twice a year and they last for 3 weeks or so.They are messy to deal with and can lead to health problems or unwanted puppies,so it is best to spay your dog..

She's going into her first heat! Heat cycles last for 3 weeks! One week going in, one week in and one week coming out. Keep her away from all male dogs. While she is in heat and you take her outside to go potty, then go with her and bring her back inside with you, when she's done. When she is out of heat, please take her to the vet and have her Spayed. It will help avoid certain types of Cancer, she will no longer go into heat and she will not be able to become pregnant! You need to be extremely careful when a female is in heat, because an Un-Neutered male can smell a female in heat, from miles away and he will do anything it takes to get to her, mate with her, and get her pregnant!

Research dog heat cycles online. Pretty much all animals go through some sort of menstrual cycle.

You need to keep her away from any unneutered male or you will end up with several puppies!
