What's the difference between the iPod Touch 1st and 2nd generation?
I have the iPod Touch and i dont know which generation I have =/ All I know is that I don't have the Apps Store (which, if anyone knows how to get it, please tell me). Whats the difference between them?
Can you download the software without paying? Is there a way you can get it free?

The iPod touch 2Gen has a volume toggle on the side of the machine. The machine’s back is more curved, the battery life is a lot longer, and the machine works a lot faster than the 1Gen.
If you bought your iPod recently, it is probably a 2Gen because the 1Gen stops selling as soon as the 2Gen reaches the stores. Please keep in mind that you can’t jailbreak the 2Gen iTouch just yet.
Hope that Helped!

If you don't have the app store, then it's the 1st generation. You can get it by going to itunes, visiting your ipod and purchasing the new software upgrade for 10$. That will give you the app store and a few other little features.
Otherwise, the 2nd gen has built in speakers, a better battery, and it's a little slimmer than the 1st gen. Not much difference between the 2 once you get the software update.

So many things are different with the 2G iPod Touch:
1: It has a high quality speaker for "easy listening".
2: A volume control on the side.
3: A longer battery life: 36 hours for music and 6 hours for video.
4: It is slimmer and feels better in your hand.
5: It comes with the 2.1 update (with the 1G you have to pay around $10)
6: You can buy new in-ear headphones for it (with a microphone and remote)
and 7: It has Nike+iPod.
Basically I highly recommend the 2g iPod Touch (I have both!)
Source(s): iTouch info (2G) http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/whatsnew.html PS: Soon, Apple are going to release a 7x9 iPod Touch, like a mini TV, which could either be 1: iPod Touch 3g, 2: iPod Giant (or something like that) or 3: not an ipod, but something with "i" at the start. PSS: Get a second generation, or wait for the iPod Giant (which unfortunately isn't as portable as the 2G iTouch.) Do not get 1st iTouch. EVER. - Anonymous4 years ago
The 2d era as mentioned earlier has a 533mhz processor while in comparison with 412mhz on all the iphones and 1st era ipod touch. it fairly is the comparable cpu yet clocked bigger. do no longer worry approximately battery existence/warmth, the 2d gen ipod touch get's 36 hours of song vs 22 on the 1st gen.

2. gen has volume control buttons on the left, built-in speaker, better battery life, smoother contoured design and built-in support for a workout system called Nike+.
If you have the older gen, you can plug it into iTunes and then click Check for updates under your iPod tab, and you will be guided to where you can download the firmware for the newest iPod touch. It costs $9.95.
