For those who think that the concept of “original sin” is ludicrous, then from where does evil come?

If evil is NOT inherently contained within every human mind, then where does selfish behavior originate? If you say that evil behavior is just learned from “society”, or from “bad parenting”, then that would seem to be circular logic, as “society” is just people, and the last time I checked, “bad parents” are people too. So anyone who uses this argument is essentially conceding that “bad” comes from people, not from some mysterious “environment” external to ourselves, like a violent storm.

Unless you have a big ego, certainly you must admit that you are not a saint or an angel, and neither is anyone that you know. Children seem to be born selfish and egocentric, and have to be constantly reminded by those older and more experienced (i.e.: “society”) how to be polite, sharing, and considerate.

If you think that people are basically “good” with few exceptions, then just read history, or look at the news, and you will be quickly disillusioned (if you are at all honest).

Since being “moral” doesn’t seem to come naturally to anyone, and must be learned, then were else could “evil” come from if not from inside our own minds? It seems self evident from history that humans are all part monster (as well as part saint), so why does the common-sense idea of “original sin” strike some people as “barbaric”?

Romans 5 tells us that sin entered the world through Adam, and the result of his sin was spiritual death.

All mankind since then is born without a spiritual connection to God.

John 3:6 - Jesus says "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

In other words - we are born physical beings without a spiritual connection to God. We will naturally do what pleases the body.

By the time we've developed a sense of right and wrong, we've already committed ourselves to self-gratification.

There is nothing inherently "evil" about our bodily desires - Jesus had them too. The difference with Jesus is that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and so was born with the Spirit already. He was born into a relationship with the Father.

James 1:14-15 says "But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death."

First of all consider the parochial nature of your response. While there are basic notions of good and bad conduct, these do not exist in a a vacuum, but are shaped and molded in our relationships with each other and the greater community. No behavior is inherently evil or good, but becomes so because we agree in community that it is so. because we are the same species there are core behaviors that are taboo cross culturally and others that are not.

Secondly your understanding of theology is...well you simply don't understand it all. The concept of original sin holds that humanit is genetically damned to hell and became so because Adam and Eve disobeyed God. The notion does not hold that man's capacity for sin originated with Adam and Eve's disobedience. Clearly they had the capacity to sin before actually doing so. What is not "common sense" is that a supposed god of infinite love would pre-destine an entire species for eternal torment in hell because of the disobedience of one man and one woman, i.e. to convict us all and torture us all eternally for an act we did not commit. That is what is "barbaric." Burning naieve and inexperienced children in hell forever, which is what Adam and Eve were, because they ate fruit you told them no to eat. That's the equivalent of you sticking your child in a fired up pizza oven because they took a cookie from the cookie jar without your permission. If that is not barbarous to you, then you are hardly someone who should bandy about terms like "common sense."

  • We all have an inclination towards "evil" physical things. In Judaism, this is called "Yetzer haRa" [lit. Evil Impulse]. These are our impulse to sleep, eat, be selfish, sex, anger, etc.... They're physical impulses.

The problem with "original sin" is that it states that all people are born with "SIN" in them. This can't be because it means that there's no way we can achieve what G-d demands of us. He's created a flawed being in this case.

Within Judaism we state Every morning,

    "Elokay, neshama shenatata bi tehora"

"My G-d, the soul that you have given me is Pure".

Our impulses come from within, but Original sin pretty much states that we're destined for failure.

Our souls are pure at birth. It's up to us to decide what we watch, what we eat, what we listen to, what we do, which either maintains our souls pure or taints them.

I'd like to maintain my faith in the goodness of people and not be disillusioned because of what a minority of evil people do in this world.

If one believes in god as the creator, then evil must have come from god, as everything did. He created a creature whose nature contained evil. If some people were found to be sinless, than we could entertain the possibility that evil is committed by choice. But since every person commits sin, it's disingenuous to pretend it's a choice.

There are surely some local psychologists in your area that you could talk to, especially if you're hearing or seeing the "spirit." Other than that, the best way to fight an evil spirit is to realize it doesn't exist. I am also being 100% serious. My answer is to help you, despite it being nothing you want to hear.

It gets very basic. WE are evil. WE are also good. When we choose between the two is our test of faith, our test of our conviction and intent. We choose what we do. We cannot put the blame onto biblical characters, fate, or bad luck. No, it's pretty simple. We choose, it's always been about choices, and making the right ones more often than bad.

Evil comes from Satan, you don't need original sin for evil to exist in the Earth.

Why would a new born baby go to Hell, if it dies while giving birth? Just because he/she didn't have a chance to grow up and accept Jesus, do you think he/she should go to Hell? I don't think so, that's just wrong.

Original Sin is a man made concept, Jesus never talked about it. And he never propagated it. Just like he never said "I am God" or "Worship Me" in the Bible.

Selfishness has high value as a survival instinct; So does cooperation among social beings such as ourselves. It is the conflict between selfishness and cooperation which is the driving force.

One can find convincing evidence that evil is contained in man's nature. But to say that this has anything to do with "original sin" is an act of faith, is it not? I can assert that evil began when the god Shmendrick stubbed his toe. Who is to say that your myth is better than mine?

evil is born.......just like a babys behaviour.....you have already taken part in evil the day you were born....your parents were your tools......sometime later they will repent.......every1 will repent.......thats when the going gets tough..... some repent long and some short...its a matter of how much fun you have taken........
