What's happened to music?

It seems to me that music these days is very empty, and lacks the content that it had in previous generations.

In the 1960s, you had the Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and music seemed to have immense amounts of passion, and substance.

U2, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Marvin Gaye, and so many others seemed to put so much passion and content into their music, and you could tell there was deep emotion and thought in their songs.

I feel that since about 2000, pop music has been going downhill fast, and we're now left with singers like Katy Perry, or all the American Idols who seem to only care about being famous.

Does anyone else feel like the days for music for the sake of music are long gone? Wh do you think this happened?

You don't need to listen to thousands of albums to base an opinion on modern day music. The truth is, today's stuff simply lacks everything that music used to be. There aren't anymore groundbreaking guitarists like Page, I have yet to hear a singer with the same passion of Mercury, and I haven't heard good, original, meaningful lyrics like Bob Dylan's.

All you hear anymore is samplings of older songs and sped up covers. It is no wonder Springsteen is doing the super bowl show and AC/DC is selling out arenas in one day. Today's music is at best decent guitar work, an over commercialized lead singer, and the poor soul behind the scenes who writes all of their songs for them.

Vicky, I wasn't in any way attempting to bash what you said or prove you wrong. What you have is your opinion, and I have mine. If you use your own reasoning, then how can anyone on earth possibly judge music at all? There is not a single person on this earth who can claim they have listened to all types of music through each generation.

I simply took a sample of the newer stuff (yes, I gave it a chance) and went from there. I listened to everything from Taylor Swift to Rammstein, and it isn't my flavor. Last time I checked I'm allowed to have an opinion on music, so for you to say that "I'm wrong" is ridiculous.

The one place where I completely differ from you is your statement that there are other musicians out there like Dylan, Mercury, and Page. Can you honestly sit there and tell me that today's musicians are on the same level as these guys? They obviously have talent, but I truly feel that they will never, ever, reach the level that those men are on. I don't think it is even fair to mention them in the same breath.

  • Mainstream music has gone down the sh*tter alright & what you say is true about people just wanting to be famous.

A great example of such a argument is that a few hours back someone asked, "what are some cover songs that improve upon the originals"? Alot of people mentioned Leona Lewis' Run improving upon the original & if I were Snow Patrol then I would be well p*ssed off at that.

Snow Patrol are a bit boring but at least they write their own music & im starting to gain more respect for them. They put so much effort into writing that song & it done ok in the charts. Then a woman wins X-Factor and just sits back nicely in a recording studio & sings a song already written which is gonna mek her into a millionaire.

Rock & Metal music have never been better though in my opinion, I have discovered so many great bands in the last 2 years.

I could have sworn I just answered this.

I'm about done with people whining about how music has no substance to it anymore. How many albums released in 2008 did you listen to? If it is anything less than a thousand, than you can't even BEGIN to have an opinion on the entire year.

Music is released ALL over the entire world, from hundreds upon hundreds of different musical styles. If you can't find anything, you're not trying. A blind man could find it.

Just another person who bases mainstream music on all of the music being produced around the world.....

    --------------

Also, I'm not trying to be rude or insulting. It's just frustrating to see this all the time, and mostly from people who have barely heard anything beyond the top 40.

    --------------------

A Kind of Magic, did I say you couldn't have an opinion on the music itself? No. You can listen to ten thousand albums and hate them for all I care. But if you've barely listened to anything from today, how can you judge music as a whole?

And you, I'll put it bluntly, are wrong. There are people out there with music and/or lyrics that rival the ones you mentioned.

But whatever, I'm sure you're going to disagree and blahblahblah. I've said it before, I'll say it again. Those who jump on the "New music sucks because nothing is original or meaningful" bandwagon are just as pathetic as those who jump on the "Old music sucks because it's boring and for old people" bandwagon.

    Good day.

  • Well, the record companies have figured out the formula to create more of a product than a piece of art. I regard most of the music people buy today as an object that is merely an excuse for a ringtone more than art. Im not a nazi or anything, I believe people should buy what they like to hear, but no one take the time to sit and explore music, they merely want to hear the songs that are spoon fed to them because they are catchy, not because they are thought provoking. Hopefully there is eventually a backlash against celebrities and people start to wake up and think.

I think this happened, because us humans are becoming more focused on money, then anything, and the singers, hardly even put effort into the writing of their songs, nor the vocals. It's pretty sad actually that the populist song for a while, was a man talking about apple bottom jeans, and boots with fur.

I mean, really did he just go and look into a closet, and say hmm, I am going to sing about jeans, and boots.

I agree. There is still a ton of music out there that has passion and a lot of meaning, but the majority of Pop [short for Popular] music seems to be just for the money. I could be wrong, but thats what it seems like.

Country music today, they put thought into the music.

The music you'll have heard of from decades ago is the stuff that was good enough to survive and have people still listening to it, You're probably just listening to the wrong music that's coming out recently. If you're just watching American Idol or music channels then of course you're not gonna find anything that great.

It's gotten over-commercialized. Art used to drive the money, but now Money drives the "Art". It's terrible. But good music is still around, even if it isn't super-popular. But there a few good popular bands (Foo Fighters, Rise Against, & Bruce Springsteen is still around).

  • Some bands(Serj Tankian, Scars on Broadway[although Daron does it partly to afford pot, and therein lies the problem with celebrities], and Slipknot make music not for money, but to make a point, and to get many people to like different types of music.

I kinda agree. But i don't listen to the radio so i don't have to hear most of the crap thatd around nowadays! Just seek out the good music, like i do, then you'll find that theres loads of amazing unsigned and less known bands out there! :)
