Anyone traveled the ALCAN HWY (aka alaska hwy)?

My parents have traveled it, and my friends who moved up there have traveled it. I was hoping to do it this past summer, but finances prevented me. I did, however, prepare.

My advice, as passed on to me, is to first of all, get yourself a current copy of Milepost( http://www.amazon.com/2009-Milepost-61st-Kris-Vale... ). It has ALL the info you need about ongoing highway repairs - and all the other info you could possibly need, as well.

It has only a small section dedicated to preparing for and driving the Al-Can, but it's an enjoyable read, nonetheless.

What I've heard is that you will need to have a gas can with you, a good spare tire, lots of patience (summer is road-work time) and a camera. I've also heard that if your car breaks down along the highway, there are usually lots of nice folks willing to help... especially if you stand next to your car looking totally helpless and clueless.

I have gone up the hiway a couple of time, my sister has driven it many many time. It is a pretty easy road to drive now, they have straightened it out alot in the last few years. Be aware it is a long ways between stops, there is lots of heavy truck traffic on it, but it is pretty safe. A stop at Liard Hot Springs is a must, very pretty also Muncho Lake.

It is well worth the trip.
