No, a child should not be punished for speaking his or her own language.

The reasons why you have to learn to speak English in India is that it is the first international business language and, if you are speaking it correctly, it will give you better chances to find a good job and be understood when you travel abroad. You may think it is a despicable language because it is that of the nation who occupied your country for many years, but in fact nowadays English is important because it is the language of the USA who technically appear to be the most powerful state in the world, and not that of little UK where the Scots and the Welsh are also arguing for independence.

A large number of firms in Europe outsource their businesses to India where there are many call centres employing people who otherwise would be without work for instance. It is important for them to speak good intelligible English, and therefore schools insist on English being spoken in secondary schools because total immersion in the language helps to practice and improve the general standard. It does not mean that Hindi or any other language spoken in India (where there are many dialects which differ from others) is bad . English seems a bettter and more useful common tool than Urdu, for instance, as it is spoken, taught and understood by people all round the world.

However it should not prevent your local schools to teach Hindi at the same time, and to preserve the local culture.

If it is any conslolation to you, British identity is also being eroded by other cultures and long standing traditions are being progressively dropped to achieve a muticultural society adopting other countries' festivals. A few years ago few people were aware of what Diwali was and now certain English towns put up decorations to celebrate it and it also appears as a date on the British calendars. We, in England, deplore that the English language is being "polluted" by American expressions.

Internationally, it is the price one has to pay for better commercial or touristic interchanges and, for many people, a better standard of living than even thirty years ago.

Of course you have the ability to learn two and even many more languages. Native people from Luxembourg speak three languages fluently by the time they get to secondary school and pick up others like English at that point. It is mainly the English and the Americans who find learning languages difficult and that is because they are not forced to learn another language in primary school and have little inclination to learn other languages simply because theirs is largely understood elsewhere where they travel.

    Are you living in India?

Maybe you don't know this, but not all Indians speak Hindi. It is not the native language for most southern Indians. If you only speak Hindi, you cannot even communicate with people from your own country. If you learn English you can communicate with fellow Indians and people around the world. English is the business language of the world.

Where are you living? If it's the U.S., or another English speaking country, they are doing this, because this is the language we speak. Your kids will have a hard time, not knowing the language of the country they live in.

If you don;t plan on staying here long, and want your kids to speak Hindi, maybe you should try the Indian embassy. They often run schools that teach lids their own language.

But, once you've made a decision, what's wrong with your kids learning English? Most Europeans are bi-or even tri-lingual. English is the second most commonly spoken language in the workd-only Mandarin tops it! And, while not trying to put it down, Mandarin is spoken almost exclusively in China-while England, The U.S., Australia, and many of the West Indies speak English. Knowing English could certainly broaden your childrens' horizons.

I repeat-if you plan on your kids spending most of their time in India, they SHOULD definitely learn Hindi. But, for a second language, English is an excellent choice.

There is nothing wrong with Hindi. However, English is becoming the international language. It is important to learn.

They're not punishing you, it's for your well being. If you intend on staying in the US, you need to learn English to succeed. Plus it's disrespectful to the people around who don't understand Hindi... You can always, you know, go back home =\
