Do you know an easily digested dog food?

A friend has a minpin with a Kidney disorder. She needs to feed a food that is easily digested. She can not do raw, as she travels alot. Does anyone know of a food that may be good? I did not get an exact problem with the dog. She has spent thousands in the states and the vets here could not tell her what was wrong. On a recent trip to Brazil, she learned it was a kidney problem, that is treatable with diet. I have a call into a canine nutritionist friend of mine already, but was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions to look into. Thanks

Update:

The food the vet reccomended is only available in Brazil. We need to find something available here. The Brazilian vet only told her to find something easily digestable.

I was thinking maybe k/d.

Update 2:

Sorry, we both live in New England/New York.

I would think that she should be on a specific food for kidney problems. Purina makes a great one called NF otherwise there is one by Science Diet called K/D. These do come in canned and dry forms. Good luck!

What kind of kidney disorder does your dog have? I feed California Natural to my dog with "kidney issues" with no problems, but her problems may be different...she tends to develop crystals/stones, but since putting her on CN, she hasn't had an issue. It's POSSIBLE that the best food for your dog COULD be a prescription diet, there are times that would be the best choice, but more often, a good, high quality kibble (that you researched ingredients on) or an easily made homemade diet would be a better choice than the prescription.

A few places to check out (after getting an accurate diagnosis from your local vet) would be Yahoo's Canine Kidney Diet group (there are a few groups on yahoo that may help you through this) and a holistic veterinarian. A holistic vet would likely be able to guide you through the entire process better than anyone (and run any advice you get on the internet past him/her anyway). Even if you don't have a holistic vet in your area, most will work with your local vet and with you over the phone.

I would feed RAW if you can. Google "RAW FEEDING" or "Homemade dog food." Research goes a long way. Try a fish based food, that is grain free. And stop feeding the rice and veggies on top of the crappy dog food. You are only giving carbs, not protein, and that will make your dog fat. Your dog only eats as much as you feed it, so I don't buy the "She eats so much" comment. You are going to end up with a fat dog if you keep doing what you're doing. Not criticism, just info.

    NOT SCIENCE DIET!!!!!!!

that food is pure over priced CRAP!

you mentioned Brazil.. but you never said where you live..

this is an excellent link on food ingredeints it tells you which are easy to digest and which are hard..

print it off and take with you to your local pet food store (NOT grocery store or big box store) - you can get better food at independant pet stores or even livestock feed stores..

look for a LOW SODIUM food too..

your friend doesn't need one that is "easily digestested" she needs one that has low protein and low sodium as these are 2 things damaged kidneys cannot filter properly and they cause the kidneys to work over time. if she doesn't want to research foods and use special kidney diets as comparison such as royal canins lp, science diets kd, or purinas nf then she needs to just feed one of those foods. if this is the case, I would recommend the lp. these foods are specially formulated for kidney disease and are only available through a vet.

The best thing to do is to get the specialist dog food that most vets sell specifically for whatever medical problem each dog has rather than trying diets which may increase the problem.

above didn't mention that the science diet k/d is like $60 for an 18 lb bag.

regardless of your friend's travel, she should still consider raw feeding. it can be much easier than she thinks, especially since frozen meat will stay frozen or cold a surprizingly long time in a cold pack or thermal lunchbox!
