Does an african dwarf frog need air from the surface?
I have my frog in the tank with my other fish and I was just reading something about they get stressed out from trying to get to the surface to breath. Now I might be an idiot but I thought they had gills like fish. I'm wrong aren't I?
My tank is ten gallons, is there any way I can create something for him to rest on near the top?
but will he be stressed if it's too high? That's what someone was telling me, that it's so high up for him that he'll be stressed out from having to jump all the way up there all the time.
Hehehe, yeah I guess that was pretty stupid of me to think they have gills, it's just that I never see him go to the top. I just assumed. Well we all know what happens when you assume.

You are wrong. They breathe air from the surface. They dont need to rest up top, they just swim up real quick and grab a gulp and go back down. Some will rest near the top in theres something there, but its not needed. They are a frog. And frogs dont have gills. Thats what fish have.
How high is high? Ive successfully kept dwarf frogs in a standard 29 gallon tank (18 inches high I think, dont remember and cant find the tape measure). SO your 10 gallon tank will be fine. They can hold their breath for something like 10-15 minutes, so you have to keep an eye on them if you want to see them grab their air. They do it in a split second. Fast little guys. lmao
Someone doesnt know anything about african dwarf frogs... *looks down* African Dwarf (and the much larger Clawed cousins) and fully aquatic frogs. They are both closely related to the Surinam Toad, another fully aquatic frog (do I call it a frog? lmao. It looks like crab met frog and had little toad babies.).

You are all wrong. African Dwarf Frog s don t have gills, they don t absorb oxygen through their skin and they do not breath on the surface. The African Dwarf Frog has a specialized organ which hydrolyzes water absorbed through its skin. The water molecule is broken down into oxygen which is absorbed into the blood stream. The Hydrogen gas is expelled. This is why if you put a collector at the top of your tank it will fill with flammable hydrogen gas.

they go up about every 15 mins
they should be fed only good quality frozen blood worms
they don't really float on the surface for fun..if they stay high it means there upset , weak and sick
but some lazy ones will float
just get plants in the tank for them to climb and rest.

you need to keep the water super clean with these guys..as they are literally 70% water and will get sick far faster than fish in old water.
I never mix them with fish...there own tank is always best if possible
good luck!!!

They filter oxygen through their skin. They do extract air from the surface, filter oxygen, and release the are bubble. Your frogs would be fine with nothing to rest on, and it wold probably be better, as they could use it as a way to jump out of the aquarium. When they are getting air from the surface, it will look like they are drowning, but they aren't, so don't worry.

Yes it does. Could you develop a ladder of rocks to reach the top of the tank. He could climb the rocks or rest on them.
I think you should get him another tank filled halfway with water, planted, and set with rocks. It needs a habitat for a frog.
